Rated 5 Stars by Reader’s Favorite: “The unique band of outlandish characters was superbly developed. Not easy to put down. I highly recommend it.”
IMAGINE a world where war as we know it is obsolete. Imagine a war where casualties are replaced by points, where target dummies are the only things that are supposed to get shot. Now imagine the greatest treasure the world has ever known… is buried at the bullseye center of the war zone! A small group of misfits, failures, and castoffs, along with a decrepit old jeep named Beulah, enters the World War III war zone in search of the legendary Maboso treasure. But they must dodge bombs and bullets – and sometimes each other – through 180 miles of African jungle to get to the “X” on the ancient treasure map. Can they make it alive? Or will they die trying?
Author’s Note: In a very real sense, this is an “alternate present” novel. The book is based on today’s technology but in a world that is quite different from the one you and I populate.
A Bloody Wonderful War is dedicated to the men and women of the American military; past, present, and future. We would not enjoy the freedom to read – and to write – whatever we want without your dedication, your bravery, and your sacrifice. Thank you.

Herb Hughes, an Alabama native, worked in the computer industry for over two decades before leaving to create a successful private business. He later sold his business to focus on writing novels.
A Bloody Wonderful War is his fourth novel. It is a comedy about World War III. Only targets are supposed to be shot, but a small group of failures, misfits, and castoffs travels through the dangers of the war zone in search of the greatest treasure the world has ever known.
Mr. Hughes has published three previous novels: Tennessee Yankee, a historical work set during the Civil War and the years afterward, is his first novel. It is the story of a man’s struggle with his conscience, with love, and with war. His second novel, The Joystick Murders, is the first book in an open-ended future detective series about Master Detective, Drake Blast, a world-traveling sleuth. It is set in the year 2042, in a world with computer implants, autonomous cars, and super-intelligent bad guys. His third novel, Killing Rhinos, is science fiction with a western feel. It is set on Agrilot, a planet that was supposed to be a second chance at life for condemned prisoners from Earth. But they discover that there is something very bizarre happening on Agrilot.
“My interests are far-ranging, and so are my books. I have trouble limiting myself to one or two genres. If you have diverse interests, too, join me.”
“I am fortunate enough to live on a pond surrounded by a golf course, with my beautiful wife of many years and two fairly stupid cats. I love to walk out into my back yard and toss my lure into the water. Every now and then it actually entices a fish. I also enjoy golf and have great plans to become good at the game someday in the future. Perhaps the far future. But mostly I’ve got a lot of novels to write. I’ve got so many floating around in my head, I’ll need to live to a hundred and fifty to get them all done.”
