The murder of a United States Senator pulls a Washington lawyer into a deadly conspiracy to swing the political pendulum to the far right, and he is the only one with the power to stop it.
Failure is not an option.
Jason Burke’s successful career as a newly admitted partner to the law firm of Chatfield & Smythe is shattered when his pro bono client, an undocumented hotel maid struggling to avoid deportation, witnesses the interrogation and murder of a United States Senator. His investigation into her subsequent disappearance uncovers the Senator’s role in a powerful ideologue’s diabolical scheme to push the political pendulum to the far right. Successful implementation, utilizing a biological weapon confiscated from a defecting North Korean scientist, will result in the death of countless innocent people, both politicians and civilians.
After multiple attempts on his life to thwart his investigation, and being framed for a murder he didn’t commit, Burke realizes his only option is to fight back and stop the man’s pursuit. He is quickly drawn out of his comfort zone as a trial lawyer in the courtroom to that of a clandestine operative who at times must kill or be killed. Failure will be fatal for him and many others, and push Washington’s political leadership and judicial philosophy to the far right for the foreseeable future.
An outcome not demanded by the American voters, but by the agenda of a single man.

After spending countless hours in cubicles, offices and conference rooms over the last thirty plus years Tom purchased a small house near the water in Panama City Beach, Florida and shifted his focus to his passion for writing thriller and suspense novels.
Tom was born and raised in the twin cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. When he was young he was moved by a quote by Mark Twain, and it soon became his mantra:
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed
by the things that you didn’t do than the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the wind in your sails. Explore, dream, discover.”
At 18 he paid $300 for an old International Harvester Metro Delivery van, installed bunks and a heater and lived in it for a winter ski bumming in the Rockies. He spent another winter as a lift operator in Vail, Colorado, a third ski bumming in a slightly newer Dodge van and his summers sailing Minnesota lakes on his Hobie Cat catamaran, all before turning 22. He squeezed in some college coursework at the University of Minnesota as his schedule permitted, driving school bus and tending bar to support himself. But when his mother learned he was a fourth year freshman he succumbed to her “subtle” pressure, set aside his wanderlust and focused on his studies.
Tom earned a BSB in Accounting and an MBA in Finance from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Following graduation, he joined the audit staff of an international public accounting firm and was awarded his Certified Public Accountant certificate. After seven years in accounting and finance he entered law school in a part-time, evening program while continuing his professional career, earning his JD, magna cum laude, from William Mitchell College of Law in Saint Paul. He spent the next twenty five years in private practice and as corporate counsel for a national Minneapolis bank.
