At UC Santa Cruz in the early nineties, three young people cross paths, each obsessed by a work of art or artist. For Katherine, the neurotic bookworm, it’s Pride and Prejudice, which provides an escape from hard-edged modern life. For Greg, the prim biologist, The Sound of Music, ushering him into a family circle where love and do-re-mi conquer all. For Lawrence, aspiring singer, the diva Branwen Hughes, who may be a real person, but transports him into the giddily unreal realm of opera-land.
Weaving together over the next twenty years, the lives of these three friends expand in scope to dot-com-boom San Francisco, other parts of the country, and finally other parts of the world. We share their experiences of a Zen monastery in rural Marin, a Polish-American wedding in Illinois, a trip to an Indian ashram in quest of Amma, the Hugging Saint. As their relations with each other twist and turn, so do their ties with their different Works of the Imagination.
Author Bio:
After escaping several years ago from my white-collar wage slave job in San Francisco, I’ve been off seeing the world, traveling in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, and of course writing about my experiences. I’ve written two novels, a collection of short stories, and a play that recently received its premiere in Edinburgh. All these works are available on Amazon.
