Interview With Author Alex Naylor
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
One debut novel out now, and my next one is in the works!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Bohemian Sledgehammer was inspired by the beautiful yet eerie Appalachian wilderness, as well as the quiet ways ruin can creep into isolated places, and how superstitions and belief can shape our decisions in malicious and mysterious ways
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My cat is always beside the keyboard, regularly judging my prose and offering unconstructive criticism.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I loved Arthur Conan Doyle while growing up, all the Sherlock mysteries, trying to figure it out as I read along. Recently I’m very much enjoying Cormac McCarthy’s work, especially The Road and Blood Meridian.
What are you working on now?
It’s another gothic horror novel, this time based in Yorkshire! Featuring the local folklore and beauty.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There is a really great book community on Instagram, loads of lovely readers writers and reviewers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write it for yourself and write what you would enjoy reading. Don’t keep outside opinions in the forefront of your mind while writing, if you’re true to writing what you enjoy, it will resonate with the right readers.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Every author at one point in their lives wasn’t an author.
What are you reading now?
Plenty of research into the local folklore of the North of England!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Keep on keeping on writing. I’m also going to be turning Bohemian Sledgehammer into an audiobook!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
