Interview With Author B Carter
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m B Carter, a mum of four living with my family on a small farm near Winchester. Being surrounded by wildlife and seeing my children’s curiosity about the creatures they discover outdoors inspired me to begin writing nature-based stories for young readers. Barnabee’s Bug Hotel is my first published children’s book.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
y latest book is Barnabee’s Bug Hotel. It was inspired by spending time outdoors with my children and seeing how fascinated they were by the tiny creatures living around us. I wanted to create a gentle story about nature, friendship and finding something valuable that you can contribute even when you are the smallest and fluffiest bee on the farm.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to develop ideas while I’m outside rather than sitting at a desk. A walk through the garden or woods will often spark a character or part of a story, so I keep notes of little ideas and observations before bringing them together properly later.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have always loved children’s books that combine memorable characters with the natural world. Beatrix Potter, A. A. Milne, Julia Donaldson or another favourite author. I particularly admire stories that are entertaining for children but also have something gentle and meaningful beneath the surface.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently creating more activities and nature-based content around Barnabee and his friends, including ideas to help families build their own bug hotels. I’m also beginning to explore where Barnabee’s next adventure might take him. I have another in the series underway…
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still learning what works best, but I have found that combining my own website with useful, nature-based content is a good way to introduce families to Barnabee’s world. Social media also helps readers discover the characters and see some of the ideas behind the book. Im pushin Instagram and having success, but its. early days.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start writing before you feel completely ready. It is very easy to wait for the perfect idea or the perfect moment, but books develop through writing, rewriting and sharing them with people whose opinions you trust. Most importantly, create something you genuinely care about.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write the book you would have loved to read yourself. It is much easier to create something honest and engaging when you feel a genuine connection to its characters and message.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I would love to continue developing the world of Chalk Stream Farm and tell more stories involving Barnabee and his friends. There are plenty of other small creatures and big outdoor adventures still waiting to be discovered.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would take The Complete Tales of Beatrix Potter, The BFG by Roald Dahl and The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame—three books full of wonderful characters and imagination that I could happily read again and again.
