Interview With Author Chris Johnson
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an Australian indie author who writes fast-paced science fiction and supernatural thrillers. My stories usually follow ordinary people who stumble into extraordinary situations—time travel, strange mysteries, and the occasional brush with the impossible.
I’m the author of the ChronoSpace time-travel series, which currently includes four novels: Bootstrap’s Journey, The Paradox of Buck Nowlan, The Titanic Connection, and The Legacy Unwritten. I’m also working on additional stories connected to the series and another one with an occult detective named Craig Ramsey.
When I’m not writing, I enjoy running, watching films, and occasionally drawing on my past life as a professional magician and mentalist.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Before Bootstrap’s Journey.
It’s a prequel to my Bootstrap’s Journey (the first book in my ChronoSpace series of time-travel books). I wanted to show what led to Tony Nowlan’s discovery of time travel, the emotional side of it, and the dangers that came into play as he created the time machine.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Unusual to whom?
I like to listen to the same CDs whenever I write. James Bond themes, Hooked on Swing, and movie themes by John Williams. All instrumental.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Ian Fleming, John Gardner, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Traci Harding.
What are you working on now?
I’ve just finished a prequel in my ChronoSpace series (time-travel adventures) and am preparing for the sixth book in its series. It’s in the outline stage right now.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
For me it comes down to two things: a good email newsletter and word of mouth. I like connecting directly with readers who enjoy time-travel stories, and a mailing list is the best way to do that. I also use reader discovery platforms like BookBub and Goodreads to help new readers find the series. That includes AwesomeGang of course.
On that note, readers who love time-travel can enjoy a free e-book on my website at https://larrikinbooks.com/b/beforebootstrapsjourneysample to see how the ChronoSpace time-travel series begins.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write, write, write. There is no failure, only results. Learn from them and stay focused.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Get off Facebook (and all other social media).
Among other things, it lets you concentrate on your writing and your reading by helping keep your head clear.
What are you reading now?
Kiss my Assassin – by Dave Sinclair.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m currently working on finishing my time-travel adventure series. It involves a main character who invents a time machine called the ChronoSpace. Oddly enough, he’s a bootstrap paradox in himself. Despite being unable to manipulate past events, he learns how to use history to help himself and others. I’ve finished 4 main novels and 2 novellas in it so far, and have another 2 to go before I’ll consider it complete.
Then there’s my Craig Ramsey – Occult Detective series. He’s a psychic capable of psychometry, astral travel and talks with ghosts. Based in Australia, he comes across some incredible situations in the first 4 books, and there are more to come there too.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. How to Build A Raft From Coconuts
2. How to Create a Laptop and Internet Connection Using Coconuts
3. How to Build A Power Grid on a Desert Island
