Interview With Author Dael Alhemyari
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Yemeni writer with a strong interest in history and health. I’ve written five books so far, three of them focused on history, where I aim to present real events and figures in a clear, engaging, and accessible way for modern readers.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is The Arab Women of Fire. It was inspired by my readings of real historical sources and my surprise at many of the events and lives I came across. Some of these stories were intense, unexpected, and often overlooked, which made me want to share them with others in a clear and engaging way.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really. I prefer to keep my writing process simple and focused, without any unusual habits. I focus more on clarity, flow, and telling the story in the most direct and engaging way possible.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been influenced by popular historical books like Sapiens and Guns, Germs, and Steel, especially in making history clear, engaging, and accessible for general readers.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on another history book that explores different stories from our past, focusing on unusual and surprising events from a unique angle.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still relatively new to promoting my books through external platforms. So far, I’ve mainly tried a few free or low-cost promotion sites, and one of the most effective for me has been Ben R (@bknights).
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I’m still learning myself, so I wouldn’t claim to have strong advice yet. But one thing I’ve realized is that consistency and actually finishing your work matter more than overthinking the process.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t chase perfection—just do the best you can.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading The Moor’s Account by Laila Lalami, a historical novel that explores the story of an Arab traveler in the early Americas through a unique perspective.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to continue writing more books that explore overlooked stories from Arab history, with a focus on making them engaging, accessible, and easy to read for a wider audience.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d probably take a mix of history and storytelling. Sapiens for the big picture, Guns, Germs, and Steel for how civilizations shaped the world, The Moor’s Account for its perspective on identity and exploration, and one classic novel like The Count of Monte Cristo for pure storytelling and depth.
