Interview With Author Daria White
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Daria, and I’ve been writing since I was thirteen years old. I used to stay in my room writing in loose-leaf notebooks. I kept it to myself until college, when my dad encouraged me to self-publish. I did, and my Christmas novella, *My What If Christmas Wish*, took off.
I still kept writing on the side as I finished school. Plus, I wasn’t ready to fully go all in, as writing is very personal and vulnerable for me as an introvert. Still, I couldn’t shake the love for storytelling, so I decided to go for it in 2018 and have been self-publishing ever since. Now I have about twenty books under my belt, writing in sweet romance, cozy mysteries, and soon-to-be contemporary Christian romance.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest release is called *A Criminal’s Game*, centered on lies and deceit connected to a dating app. This came from watching a documentary series with my husband, and my imagination took off. This is the fifth book in my Bianca Wallace Mystery series, and if readers haven’t checked it out yet, they can start with book one, *Photo Bombed*.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’d say my writing habits are sometimes nontraditional as opposed to unusual. I’m the type that will write in the waiting room at my doctor’s office, during my daughter’s naptime, even if it’s fifteen minutes, or at night when I should be asleep and I can’t stop thinking about a scene. I don’t have to constantly be writing, as there’s a time for everything, but I do try to maximize the small moments when life happens.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Janette Oke’s *Love Comes Softly* series. I don’t write historical books, but I’ve always admired the talent of writing in the past accurately while still being able to connect with a contemporary audience. The first series I got hooked on as a kid was the *Mandy* series by Lois Gladys Leppard.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a new series, the Haven Hills novels, starting with *Fake It Till We Kiss*. This was inspired simply because I missed writing sweet romance, as I’ve been focused on cozy mysteries for the last six years. I have and will always love a sweet romance between the hardworking woman and the man she least expects.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have found success by collaborating with fellow authors and doing book promotions together. That’s when my mystery series picked up steam, with us all coming together and borrowing each other’s audiences. Most readers will trust a new book if an author they love recommends it.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
There’s never a perfect time to write, so it’s best to do it now. It may not always be ideal, but if this book is important to you, fight for it as best you can. There is a reader who will love it. Don’t worry about who won’t like it, as they’re not your audience anyway.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There’s a quote by the late Toni Morrison that basically said she wrote the books that she wanted to read. Anytime I feel like there’s something lacking, I decide to write it myself.
What are you reading now?
I’ve lost count of my to-be-read list lol. I got a lot to catch up on, and I look forward to it. I’m in a lot of reader Facebook groups, and the recommendations don’t stop.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve announced that I’m adding contemporary Christian romance to my catalog. I’m currently drafting that, plus self-editing my latest romance, *Fake It Till We Kiss*. I’d love to continue to grow my brand and readership, bringing stories of faith, hope, and mystery that leave readers better and not worse. There’s enough going on in the world, and I love giving my readers peace.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’m a Christian, so my Bible is the first book. The remaining ones? I’ve recently discovered Trisha Grace, so I enjoyed *Arranged* and *Mr. Bad Influence*.
