Exiled in Arms follows the Polish forces from the defeat of 1939 through the whole of the war — 303 Squadron in the Battle of Britain, the Carpathian Brigade at Tobruk, Anders and the 2nd Corps at Monte Cassino, Maczek at Falaise, Sosabowski’s paratroopers at Arnhem, and the Home Army in Warsaw. Men who helped liberate other people’s countries while their own stayed occupied.
The story does not stop in 1945. Later chapters follow the second exile, the long argument over who was permitted to remember what, and Poland’s transformation into NATO’s frontline state, watching Ukraine.

Author Bio:
Yong Zhang is an independent writer and researcher who has spent decades reading twentieth-century European military history. Tingxuan Zhang is his son, a policy analyst in Washington, DC, who writes about Chinese economic policy for a living and argues about history with his father for pleasure. Exiled in Arms began as one of those arguments and took several years to settle. It is their first book together.
