Interview With Author G.K. Woolf
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I always enjoyed writing stories, whether they’re short stories or full-length novels. Over the years, I’ve found myself with half a dozen books sitting unread on my computer, and I finally built up the courage to send one out for professional editing. Soon after, came the opportunity to publish, and now, here I am!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I like to describe Still Here as a great introduction to the psychological suspense/thriller genre for new readers. I wrote it a very long time ago, and the first draft definitely showed that! Through several rounds of editing, I was able to create a more rounded fictional world and (hopefully) a better reading experience! Still Here wasn’t inspired by anything specific, but rather the idea of a sibling grappling with grieving parents and her own desire to fully move on from their family tragedy.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I subconsciously name my terrible characters after real people which I’ve learnt that I should probably avoid! But it’s purely because I can’t think of many names, I swear!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Every book I read influences me. I particularly love Lisa Jewell, Alice Feeney, Riley Sager, John Marrs, Vanessa Garbin and so many more.
What are you working on now?
Tweaking an old, completed novel that needs a bit of freshening up. It’s both fun and torturous to go over your old writing. I both do and don’t recommend it.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m very new to this, so I haven’t figured out the best promotion method for me just yet. Smaller, private groups on social media have given me the chance to connect with real people and, hopefully, start to build a small community of interested readers. Social media marketing is quite daunting and rarely the first choice for an author. But it’s something I know I have to do, and I’m happily putting off for as long as possible. In the meantime, my website or Facebook page are probably the best places to keep connected.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
As a new author myself, I’m learning to be more confident in the achievement of simply writing a book. It’s hard to back yourself, and everyone has moments of self-doubt. I’m working on seeing past that and just continuing to write. If you write a bad book, then write a better one. Just keep going.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Something along the lines of, “No one thinks about you as much as you think they do. So just get on with it!”
What are you reading now?
Dirt Creek by Hayley Scrivenor! It’s really good!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Navigating the publication of my first book. Preparing my next publications and hoping for the best!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Three Hours by Rosamund Lupton – it’s tense, thrilling and a book I still think about regularly.
The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell – it was creepy and enthralling. A book I raced through and didn’t want to finish!
11/22/63 by Stephen King – I want a long one if I’m stuck on an island.
Where’s Wally? – so that I can stay fully entertained with an impossible task.
