Interview With Author Karen Tolentino
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Karen Tolentino, also known as Miss Kaye. I began my writing journey with a mission to help kids feel seen and included, especially those with learning disability. After winning a grant, I completed my debut book, Guess How Marion Feels, and continue writing to enrich children, one story at a time.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Once upon a time, I had a workplace challenge rooted in my late-diagnosed dyslexia. With sincere hope, my heart poured a silent wish to help children. I joked in a community about my intention to write children’s stories, which led me to apply for a grant and win it.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
For some reason, my idea stories are mostly written at 3:00 in the morning. I would wake up a little earlier, then suddenly open my laptop or take my trusty pen and let the words flow. When it’s past 3:00, I would write in the afternoon while watching Would I Lie To You – UK.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Ricky Lee, a renowned author in the Philippines, set a great example as a humble, passionate, and honourable writer by giving ordinary people a voice and a chance to be heard.
What are you working on now?
I am working on another children’s story about a young boy who had a chance to see the world from a dog’s eyes.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’d say Awesome Gang has been amazing, allowing me to showcase my book and be seen as the writer I am meant to be.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Find a strong reason why you write to keep going. Then, find a good writer to humble you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Focus your energy on what you can control, and surrender what you can’t.
What are you reading now?
The Genie in Your Genes by Dawson Churchill
What’s next for you as a writer?
New story in the works.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First of all, why just 4? This made me feel like Helen of Troy, a woman who launched a thousand books. As each of my favourite books wails, “Pick Me,” but here we are… let’s give it a go. (P.S., To all my dear favourite books, I must do what I must do. These are the picks for today. Remember, your time will come too.)
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to feel braver and imagine a brand new world away from the island.
The Genie in Your Genes by Dawson Churchill for my holistic well-being.
Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom to notice the blessings and life’s surprises in various sizes.
A bible to give me hope and a way forward.
