Interview With Author Keith Hillary
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a retired middle school teacher. I’ve written two books on Amazon for kids so far. I’m working on a several more.
I have a wife and four kids and live in Lowell, Michigan. I enjoy being outdoors especially camping, biking, and hiking.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Superhero’s Long Lost Cousin. I wrote it thirty years ago while in college. I was never happy with my own illustrations and never pursued publishing. It wasn’t until my son was showing me AI illustrations and how one can “direct” and “edit” to make them until happy with the drafts. I then went in and edited many of the picture using software to correct minor details that I couldn’t get the AI to fix.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I once got kicked out of the library while writing. I was in the kids section and had pulled some ACT prep books for a class I was giving on ACT prep. When I was done, looking at them, I pulled out my laptop at the table I was sitting in and began working on a novel project that I’ve been working on for some time. I was approached by a librarian that felt it was inappropriate for an adult male to be working on his laptop in the kids section without having any of his own kids present. I was asked to leave. I’m not sure if that has ever happened to any other authors.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Steven Kellogg. He is by far my most favorite children’s book illustrator and author.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a series of children’s nightly prayer books. I’m planning for them to be ascending in age as I create them. So far, I’ve finished one. It is available on Amazon and is titled, “God Bless.”
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Isn’t it Awesome Gang? Just started this process. Ask me again in a year or two… I’m still looking for it!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up on your dream. Keep writing whenever you can. Set aside regular time for yourself.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Do your best, and fake the rest.
What are you reading now?
The Complete Francis of Assisi: His Life, The Complete Writings, and The Little Flowers by Jon M. Sweeney.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a lot more books to pound out.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1. How to Survive Being Stranded on a Desert Island for Dummies
2. A Cookbook for Forging and Harvesting Wild Game on a Desert Island
3. Whatever Steven King’s newest book is at the time
