Interview With Author Kelly O'Hearn
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My path to authorship is a little different than most writers. I was raised in New York City, and my first career was a as a professional sommelier. So the connection to my intuition began there. During a health crisis, I turned to several energy practices like meditation and reiki, but the one that spoke to me was the tarot. I was drawn to this ancient tradition, and it seemed it was drawn to me—because for the past eight years I’ve been a master intuitive channeler, with clients all over the world. I use the cards to channel insight through conversation, perspectives, and self-reflections.
During Covid, I used the tarot to investigate my past lives—and the stories just flew out of me, thankfully onto Zoom recordings! The Arcanum series follows five souls traveling through time, reconnecting until they “get it right.” It’s told through the experience of a 21st-century woman who is slowly understanding this complicated past. Arcanum Books One and Two are now available and Book Three, titled Secrets of the Madonna, will be released this spring.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Secrets of the Madonna is inspired by my past life channeling. One tarot reading revealed that I was the muse and confidant of the Pope during the Inquisition atrocities in the late 1400s. So not only is there drama in our modern-day main character’s life, but the historical narrative is full of deception, intrigue, and of course, a really great love story.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
The fact that all of my stories were channeled through the tarot cards is highly unusual!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was a voracious reader when I was younger. I love fantasy series, so it’s fun to work on one myself. But I’m also obsessed with science and history, which also helped in writing Arcanum.
What are you working on now?
Book Four! It’s the final book in the Arcanum series, and it’s going to be a very surprising conclusion.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m not a huge consumer of social media, so to “put myself out there” was a new challenge for me. That said, I’m really enjoying the success and the dialogues Instagram and TikTok have generated. My following is so supportive. I love being on podcasts, and I do a lot of in-person events. Promoting the book is nearly a full-time job in itself.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The hardest part is simply sitting down and starting. But we all have a story to tell so I beg you to just begin!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
This life isn’t a dress rehearsal.
What are you reading now?
My last read was The Missing Pages by Alyson Richman, which I loved.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I think my career as a novelist is over after Arcanum, but I intend to keep writing newsletters, and shorter pieces. I love my “day job” working with the tarot.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’m going to bend the rules and take three book series: Harry Potter by JK Rowling, Shogun by James Clavell, and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series.
