Interview With Author Ken Schultz
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a Canadian author who never intended to publish. I only wanted to write stories for my children and grandchildren to enjoy. People who read my rough drafts insisted I should publish. I have found that my writing has improved since that first foray into publishing, with the help of my editor. Now, much to my surprise, I have written eight books so far, plus some poetry and short stories that have won recognition. My first book was an Epic fantasy that became a 5 book series. Along the way, I have also published 2 children’s books and a faith-based thriller.
I spent most of my life working in the construction industry but have always been an avid reader.
When I’m not writing, I spend my free time growing things: bonsai, flowers, and vegetables, or painting landscapes in oils.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Never Coming Home.” It’s a faith-based thriller/adventure that arrived almost fully formed in my mind at 3 am. I woke from sleep with all the characters and the plot in my head. It usually takes me a couple of years to finish the first draft, but this one took 45 days. I was able to use my experiences in Thailand and Vancouver Island to fill out the landscapes of the story. Through it, I had a chance to engage with some emotions surrounding the significant losses of a daughter to cancer and a dear friend to addiction.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I write, I put on noise-canceling headphones to block out all distractions and avoid sensory overload. I can’t think clearly if things are going on around me, especially noise. I know other authors listen to music or write in coffee shops, but that doesn’t work for me. I find my moments of greatest clarity and inspiration arise just before I get up in the morning.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My first encounter with fantasy was J.R.R.Tolkien in high school, and I have loved the genre since, but some of my favorites include John Ringo, Neil Gaiman,
What are you working on now?
I am presently working on completing the final book in the “Songs of Aarda” fantasy series, but I have an outline for a trilogy. It will be a post-apocalyptic political thriller for young adults.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Inspiration only shows up when you do.
