Interview With Author Leslie Ducena
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi,
My friends call me Leslie, and I’m a Homeless Veteran who started out as a self published Author by selling his stories on the subway and city parks,. Hoping to get off the streets one day I was blessed with the ability to write and show other Vets that with courage and belief in self, one can do anything they put their mind to.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
HOODLORE, and i wrote it for absolution. I needed to get somethings out and off of my chest. To be honest, my mom Gladys is my inspiration. She bought me my first comic subscription and used to always come home from work with new composition books for me. You know the black & white one that you couldn’t tear the pages out right.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well I start from the end of the story, because I know what i want to show the reader. Then I just create the necessary scenes to get there sooner or later.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read everybody from James Joyce to Ray Bradbury, to Langston Hughes, Baldwin, Zora, Huxley, Dickens, Rand, Donald Goines, you name it, I read it.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?

Do you have any advice for new authors?
In my humble opinion, there are no rules in writing, ok, maybe just one, and that’s just to write something every day on a piece of paper, a napkin, the back of a business card, put them all in a shoe box and after a while see what’s piled up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
” it’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to just be nice ”
What are you reading now?
A Star to Steer by. Hugh Mulzac wrote it when he was the Captain of Marcus Garveys Black Star Line.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Directing SleepAway, my Suspense Thriller Screenplay about a Sick Doctor who brings a JANE DOE back from the Dead to get Married. It’s a Morbid Love Story.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Alice in Wonderland, Animal Farm, Home to Harlem, and the Soul of Black Folks.
