Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an author of both historical fiction and young adult epic high fantasy. At various times, I have welded rails for the railroad, inspected glass in a glass factory, given checks to welfare clients, and programmed micro-code for IBM. I also helped plant a church.
I have written three novels of Christian historical fiction, one of which, The Slaves Of Autumn, is now on preorder with Amazon and being released August 3, 2020.
I have also written The Scepter and Tower Trilogy epic high fantasy series for adults and young adults. Its novella prequel, The Stolen Scroll, was release in March 2020.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
In the fantasy genre, The Stolen Scroll is a novella prequel to The Scepter and Tower Trilogy. I wrote it because the series needed an introduction and because I couldn’t give up the characters.
In the historical fiction genre, The Slaves Of Autumn, to be released August 3, 2020, is my last entry in the three-book series on ancient, Celtic Ireland. I wanted to write one book based entirely in Ireland, and this is it.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I often write in the morning then walk my dog after lunch where I mull over plot, dialogue, or structural problems. Then I write some more in the afternoon. Around six o’clock, my dog takes me on another walk, where ideas and solutions again come to me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have read widely in the classics, fantasy, and historical fiction. At one point I read mostly science fiction. Some of my favorite authors are Tolkien, Dickens, Ray Bradbury, Asimov, Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Graham Greene, and many more.
What are you working on now?
A World War I historical novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use a number of sites.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Plot your book and know your ending and your characters. Know what your protagonist wants, what goal is driving him or her to the end. Once you start writing, finish the book. So many writers never finish.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The one who perseveres is the one who wins.
What are you reading now?
G.J. Meyer’s “A World Undone, The Story Of The Great War” (for research for my next book)
What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing World War I historical fiction.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible. Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings.
