Interview With Author Matteo Sciurba
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Only one. But I have future plans ❤️
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is La Gravità del Quotidiano. It was inspired by the idea that a crack on a ceiling might be the gateway to the stars. I wanted to explore what happens when a perfectly ordinary Italian guy is turned into an alien-human hybrid and forced to become the last hope of the universe, without ever losing his fragile, imperfect humanity.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I do. I travel a lot, not by plane, but inside my own mind. I love wandering through my dreams and, when I wake up, I hold on to the most vivid stories I've glimpsed there. I chase the ones that would excite me first, hoping they might resonate with others too. So my writing often starts with me jotting down fragments of dreams, then slowly shaping them into drafts for future books. A lot of my ideas are dream-caught and then dream-crafted.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
If I had to trace my book’s DNA, I’d point to Calvino’s cosmic lightness, Le Guin’s anthropological sci-fi, and Dick’s blurred boundaries between the real and the unreal. I wanted to write a space opera where the most alien thing is not the alien, but the ordinary human trying to make sense of it all.
What are you working on now?
A new title… Can't say yet.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I hope this one. I haven't find any yet unfortunately.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep dreaming, keep writing, and never give up. The truest version of yourself will always live between the pages of your book.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
No matter how long will takes. DO IT!
What are you reading now?
Honestly? I'm between books right now. But I always have a notebook nearby to jot down ideas from my dreams. That's where my real reading begins.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have new stories already whispering in my dreams. Some are set among the stars, others are firmly planted on Earth, but all of them try to answer the same question: what does it mean to be human when everything familiar crumbles? A couple of novels are already taking shape. Stay tuned.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I had to survive, I'd cheat a little. I'd bring a survival manual, because even dreamers need to eat. Then Calvino's Cosmicomics, to keep the universe close even when I'm alone. Le Guin's The Dispossessed, to question what an island really is. And a notebook with infinite blank pages, so my own stories can keep growing while I wait.
