Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Michael Bolinger and I have done technical writing most of my life. Over the years, I’ve written numerous technology documents, manuals and user guides and recently published a science fiction novel.
I was born in Iowa and grew up in a large, blended family. We were like the Partridge family except we had ten children instead of only six. In my adult life, I served on the board of a local Habitat for Humanity affiliate for twelve years helping families in substandard living conditions realize their dream of owning their own home. My hobbies include reading, traveling, writing science fiction, poetry and listening to music.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my book is “The Doxan.” After years of writing non-fiction I was wanting to try something different. I was also wanting to write at my leisure rather than on a deadline. Because of my interest in science and technology, a science fiction novel appealed to me.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I find that writing in different settings tends to take the monotony out of the process and helps the creative juices flow. I’ve written at airports, on planes, on cruise ships, in cars (as a passenger on road trips), in the doctor’s office waiting room, at the park, on my patio, and probably in every room in my house.
Whenever I’m away from my laptop for an extended period, such as when I travel or sit in the park, I usually take a notebook with me to capture any thoughts related to my current writing project. Also, I keep a notebook on my bedside table to capture thoughts and ideas that come to me in the night.
