Interview With Author Mira Wendam
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I'm young British-Filipino author based in the UK!
You may notice my headshot. Am I really a dog? The answer is no. I am camera-shy, so Kai offered to handle publicity!
I first opened a document with creative intent in 2017 and released DEAD LINE, which I'd been working on for four years, on 31 Oct, 2025 after almost a decade spent awkwardly flitting back and forth between fantasy and science fiction.
My heart lies firmly in writing science fiction fitted with an intense thrill.
As of writing this, I have two books on Amazon.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is called The Living Machine. It explores a post-apocalyptic world where a young woman weaponises a robot and journeys north seeking revenge on the bedridden tyrant ruling through a metal surrogate. Crossing a lawless country, they form a bond as the robot uncovers memories that unravel its identity and reveals its past.
I took inspiration from the movies The Book of Eli, The Road, Finch, as well as a few images of abandoned buildings I found online.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Sometimes I like to do a little crawl on the ceiling, horror movie-style. Really gets the brain juices flowing. But seriously, not any unusual habits that I can think of!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
In general? I don't really have a single author I model myself on. My influences are more structural than literary. I love fast pacing, high stakes, constant forward momentum, combat. I'm probably influenced as much by sci-fi movies and thrillers as by books.
What are you working on now?
My third standalone sci-fi thriller. I'm not giving any information away right now, but I think it's going to be a doozy.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I promote my books through Reddit, in subs where, granted, most readers aren't looking to buy but they are receptive to my self-promo posts! I also utilise my author website + email list to reach new readers and keep engagement going beyond launch.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I see a lot of young, new writers pop up on subreddits such as r/writing and r/writers. "Can I write x?", "Am I allowed to x?", "I'm thirteen. What do you think about my new story?" First of all, don't share your age on the internet. Bad people are online.
Second of all, do not let people who aren't your target audience dictate changes to your story to the detriment of those who are! Readers care about story and emotion, not perfection.
Third, read a lot and widely. If you read as a writer trying to analyse the author's work, this will in turn subconsciously build your skills to put words on paper.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep going. Don't stop. This is a passion of yours, isn't it? A bad review is a bad review. You can't change that, but if you get many, you *can* fix up the book. Pick out the weaknesses multiple reviewers have talked about and go through them one by one to strengthen your book. And doubt kills dreams more than failure. Go for it! Write your standalone. What you can't take back is lost time and regret. You will find your audience.
What are you reading now?
Christopher Ruocchio's Empire of Silence. I'm almost 200 pages in. Really good so far and I think I'm blasting through it, but I'm a terribly slow reader in general. Don't be surprised if it takes me two months to finish!
What’s next for you as a writer?
I'm going to keep writing and growing! I'm excited to explore the ideas I have waiting in the wings. For now, it's more writing, more editing, and seeing where the next story takes me.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Empire of Silence by Christopher Ruocchio, Mindstar Rising by Peter F. Hamilton, Shards of Earth by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and Invisible Girl by Lisa Jewell. All books I haven't finished yet!
