This contemporary women fiction is more than relevant to you, too, if you are after the means to fulfilling your wishes or fortunes formula, or if you are into women adventure travel books, girl power, women empowerment, women travelers, travel memoirs, travel mystery, travel adventure, travel literature, travel novels, travel fiction, adventure mystery books, adventure stories, metaphysical fiction, rags to riches novels, and such, or if you are into books like Girl Wash Your Face, Girl Boss, Girl Stop Apologizing, Women Who Run with The Wolves…
In favor of learning by traveling, Magda breaks from the confines of conformity and quits her formal studies to pursue her dreams on her own terms, as a cultured globetrotter, maintaining her authenticity by using intuition and virtues rather than reason, knowledge and skills. The virtues of optimism, imagination, gullibility and openness get her going places.
A fateful encounter with a wealthy Chinese man sets her on a spellbinding mission to find the wish-fulfilling tree, which is told to help her achieve long-lasting happiness and prosperity. As it turns out, the magic tree is an alternative to formal education, religion, and medicine; as well as to Holy grail, Philosopher’s Stone, Golden fish, Aladdin’s lamp… There is a catch; the tree is guarded by ferocious goblins (representing the vices) that need to be tamed, not killed, by special gizmos (representing the virtues).
On her transnational journey that turns into a spiritual odyssey Magda tries to fulfill her mission by mastering the gizmos and taming the goblins in far and exotic places, in encounters with strangers, in peculiar circumstances, exceptional surroundings, in celestial spheres and mystifying tales, until her quest takes her finally to a place where everything is possible – the mystical fifth dimension. Her decade-long quest is set against the backdrop of a dozen fascinating countries around the world: Europe – Croatia, Italy, Turkey, Germany; Canada, Asia – Japan, India, China; Africa – Angola; Latin America and the Caribbean.
On her challenging quest she is confronted with all kinds of setbacks, testing her resolve; falls into the hands of goblins and is often challenged, constrained and put in extremely difficult situations, where she needs to be resourceful in finding solutions. Her tasks always require finesse rather than force, which is in a way tribute to the sacred feminine. Using her virtues, imagination and intuition, believing everything is possible and paying much attention to the world around her, which serve as omens guiding her towards her goal, young Magda becomes a high-flyer in her own right, spinning unfavorable circumstances into riches.
Inspired by true experiences, this monumental, uplifting novel raises intriguing questions about our relentless quest for self-improvement. It has the arc of a classic rags-to-riches tale, but it stands the conventional success model narrative on its head. We are told that education is the key to success, but this book challenges that, proposing that rather the virtues are the key to success and happiness.
