Interview With Author Nathan ‘Rifle’ Hamilton
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a hobbyist fiction author who primarily writes for the Christian Romance genre. I also do research publications on behalf of the American Private Security Heraldry Society.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest (and first) book is called ‘The Camellia Made of Stone’ and was inspired by a short story I wrote for a college creative writing class back in 2009.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I purposely write ‘no spice’ books and try to glorify The Lord Jesus Christ through my writing. My hope is that readers find a little bit of God’s goodness, healing, and restoration in their lives through my books. My first book, ‘The Camellia Made of Stone’ did not end on a traditional ‘happily-ever-after’ trope, which I found to be unusual in my research into the genre.
What are you working on now?
The book I am working on now is called ‘Summer in Guffrey’ and is a Christian Romance novel for the New Adult age group and is much more gritty than my first novel, but will retain my commitment to ‘no spice’ in the book.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far I would say Goodreads, but I am really new to all this, so I am still figuring out my method.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Commit to writing four or five pages a day and you will finish your book in no time… editing and polishing the manuscript is a different matter altogether. Still, once the first draft is done, polishing & editing goes much faster than getting it on paper in the first go-around.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
In general, I was told 90% of driving was staying between the ditches; the other 10% was maneuvering. Sage advice with little immediate impact at the time from the drill instructor yelling it at me, but the advice actually turned out to be fairly applicable (and true) in many areas of life.
What are you reading now?
I am looking to start ‘The Power of One Word: Redeeming Identity, Releasing Destiny’ by Tim Bojko soon.
What’s next for you as a writer?
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I would say my books would include The Bible (ESV), The Complete Collection of the Far Side by Gary Larson, my book (of course), and the ‘United States Code Annotated’ by Thomson Reuters (as tinder for starting survival fires on the island).
