I’m an inveterate reader, fiction or non fiction, but as a writer, I was drawn to the crime genre. There’s more open space and unsettled country there, fewer gatekeepers. Crime hooked me. Not so much for the whodunnit aspect, but more for the way I could take on morally ambiguous topics with their shades of gray. I was free to write whatever I wanted, as long as I delivered a good story with a beginning and end, and a reason for being. Narrative drive rules. I can understand writers chafing at the constant demand to go forward, but for a reader there are some positives, such as weeding out preaching and creating a page turner by keeping the story on track.
