Interview With Author SATHYARAJ Natarajan
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an author, visual storyteller, and visual engineer from Kerala, India. My creative journey began unexpectedly with poetry before expanding into science fiction and now mythological fiction. Alongside writing, I have worked in visual media, film restoration training, VFX-related creative environments, and currently in large-scale visual and LED event technology, where storytelling exists not only on paper but also through visuals and experiences.
Writing started as a personal expression for me. My first published work was Amma’s Love Poetry, a book inspired by emotions, family, and love. Later, my imagination moved toward science fiction and cinematic storytelling, leading to the Looped series.
So far, I have written and published four books: Amma’s Love Poetry, Looped, Looped: Echoes of Veloria, and Between the Noise and Silence. My current long-term project is a mythological fiction series titled Veera Stree Kathaas, beginning with Uttara: The Mother of the Unborn Empire.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest published book is Between the Noise and Silence.
The inspiration came from the emotions and thoughts that often live between spoken words and silence. I have always been fascinated by the hidden feelings people carry — the moments that remain unspoken, the quiet battles, memories, and emotions that shape us.
The book was born from reflection and observation. I wanted it to feel personal and intimate while allowing readers to find their own meaning inside it.
At the same time, one of my biggest creative passions now is Uttara: The Mother of the Unborn Empire, an upcoming mythological fiction novel inspired by the women of the Mahabharata. That project carries a very cinematic vision and has become one of the most exciting stories I have worked on.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. I think cinematically before I write.
Many scenes begin in my head almost like movie sequences with visuals, atmosphere, emotions, and music before they become words. Sometimes I imagine complete shots, character entrances, landscapes, or emotional moments first.
I also save random thoughts constantly because ideas come unexpectedly — during work, travel, late at night, or while listening to music.
Another unusual habit is that I often build worlds long before I start writing chapters.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I enjoy creators who retell mythology and bring new perspectives to known stories.
Authors such as Anand Neelakantan, Devdutt Pattanaik, and Amish Tripathi influenced my interest in mythological storytelling.
Epic stories, cinematic worlds, and Indian mythology have also shaped my imagination.
Beyond books, films and visual storytelling influence me greatly because I naturally think in scenes and visuals.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on Uttara: The Mother of the Unborn Empire, the first book in my upcoming mythological fiction series Veera Stree Kathaas (Tales of the Brave Women).
The series explores women from the Mahabharata through their own perspectives. Instead of retelling familiar events, I want to explore emotions, strength, sacrifice, identity, and untold voices.
This project is very close to me because it combines mythology, cinematic imagination, and emotional storytelling.
I also continue planning future books in both the Looped universe and smaller standalone works.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I believe author presence matters as much as promotion.
I use Amazon Author Central, social media, visual content, and author websites to create an identity around my books rather than only marketing them.
Because of my visual background, I enjoy creating posters, cinematic concepts, and promotional visuals.
I also believe reader connection is powerful — sharing the story behind the story often matters more than direct promotion.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start before you feel ready.
Many writers wait for perfection, but books grow through writing, rewriting, and learning.
Your first work does not need to be perfect. It only needs to exist.
Also, protect your ideas. Keep notes. Even the smallest thought can become an entire book one day.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Begin before you are ready.”
Creativity does not always arrive perfectly. Sometimes you discover the story while walking through it.
What are you reading now?
I spend a lot of time researching mythology, character perspectives, and epic narratives because of my current writing projects.
I also revisit mythological retellings and books related to storytelling and world building.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My next major step is building Veera Stree Kathaas into a multi-book series beginning with Uttara: The Mother of the Unborn Empire.
I also want to continue expanding my identity as both an author and visual storyteller while exploring new formats, smaller books, and future stories.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
• Mahabharata — because it contains endless stories and perspectives.
• Ramayana — for its timeless journey and characters.
• One notebook — because I would probably start writing another story.
• A mythology retelling because I enjoy seeing familiar stories from new viewpoints.
