THE SOUP DEPARTMENT
Book One: First Class Problem
Some jobs come with unusual challenges.
Brian Kowalski has worked the night shift at the Newark USPS distribution centre for eleven years. He has never missed a shift, never filed a complaint, and never once failed to meet his sorting targets. He is, by every measurable standard, an exemplary employee.
He is also a werewolf.
And tonight is a full moon.
And his new regional manager has just made Tuesday overtime mandatory.
Enter the SOUP Department — the Supernatural Occupational Unit Protection division, operating out of a basement office at the corner of 14th and Unremarkable, staffed by three humans with garlic bombs, silver desk accessories, and a van that smells of anxiety.
Agent Diana Marsh has handled forty-seven supernatural workplace incidents in six years without breaking a sweat. She has shut down vampire trance attempts with a single snap. She has talked werewolves off ledges, negotiated with entities older than the city she works in, and once resolved a blood feud that had lasted since 1683 — accidentally, through a coffee spill, but it counts.
Agent Kevin Okafor has a probability tree with forty-one sub-branches and a chamomile thermos for exactly this kind of situation.
Trainee Casey Webb has catastrophic dumb luck, a bag that has seen better days, and a supernatural ability to make everything go wrong in exactly the right way.
Tonight they are going to Newark.
Brian’s accommodation agreement got lost in a filing cabinet in Parsippany when his last supervisor retired. His new manager wants to feature him in the regional newsletter. The full moon is in forty minutes.
The mail must go through.
