About TARA: Break Free From Fear, Overcome Anxiety, and Take Back Your Life
“Fear doesn’t attack. It postpones.”
A Tibetan practice for the anxious mind, explained mechanism by mechanism.
It’s 9:52 on a Tuesday and the meeting starts at ten. Your chest already knows. The mind is rehearsing every way this could go wrong, and a familiar voice offers the oldest solution there is: become smaller.
In Tibetan Buddhism, what the tradition calls Tara is the name given to the part of the mind that moves while everything else still hesitates. Look at any image of her and one detail repeats: one leg folded in meditation, the other already off the throne, a second away from rising. A thousand years of refinement went into that posture. This book is about getting your own leg down.
Inside you will find the eight fears the tradition mapped centuries ago, and where each one meets you in an ordinary week, from pride in the meeting to envy in the feed at eleven at night. The ten-syllable mantra, what each syllable carries, and what repetition does to a scattered mind. A complete practice, step by step, that you can do tonight with no ceremony, no teacher, and no permission. And the portable version, for stopped traffic, for the line, for the sleepless bed.
Here is the deal. You don’t have to believe anything, trade in your faith, adopt a goddess, or become a Buddhist. No prior knowledge is required. Practice, and watch what happens to your own fear.
One honest warning: this book does not promise a life without anxiety. What it offers is a mechanism, and mechanisms can be tested. Yours is the only trial that counts.
TARA is part of The Technologies of the Awakened Mind, a series that takes one figure of the Tibetan tradition at a time, Tara for fear, Avalokiteshvara for attachment, Manjushri for mental fog, Vajrasattva for guilt, Vajrapani for swallowed anger, and reads each one as a precision instrument for a specific pattern of the mind. Each book stands alone, in any order.
You do not need to eliminate fear to live with courage. You only need to stop treating every frightened thought as a command.

Author Bio:
Hugo Salles is a writer, lawyer, and executive. For over fifteen years, he has led teams and projects — an experience that bridged his study of Mahayana and Tibetan Buddhism with concrete everyday issues such as fear, conflict, guilt, attachment, and decision-making.
As part of this independent study path, he has translated selected Buddhist sutras into Portuguese, working with canonical texts, recognized translations, and traditional commentaries.
In the series The Technologies of the Awakened Mind, he investigates how teachings, symbols, and practices related to figures like Tara, Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, Vajrasattva, and Vajrapani can contribute to cultivating courage, clarity, compassion, and discernment.
His books follow a simple principle: teachings should not be accepted solely on the authority of those presenting them, but should be put into practice, observed, and evaluated through one’s own experience.
