St. René Descartes dedicated his life to finding true Knowledge—a journey that took him from his birthplace in rural France to the battlefields of Bavaria, the universities of Holland, and eventually to the Swedish royal court. As he traveled, he realized that much of what we think we know is based on testimony from authorities, who can be mistaken, or the evidence of our senses, which can deceive us. We must cast aside these false ideas, Descartes argued, and rely on our innate capacity of Reason to guide us to the truth. Descartes’ radical skepticism brought him into conflict with the Catholic church, Aristotelian philosophers and Scientists, and even the material world. Ultimately, his fight for intellectual autonomy transformed the way we think today.
The Gospel of René Descartes is available at a special promotional price for launch week, Aug. 12-18.
