Interview With Author Valencia Griffin-Wallace
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a Louisiana-based author writing stories rooted in real life, the things people don’t say out loud, and the dynamics we’re told to ignore. I’ve published 6 books in nonfiction genres, and I’m currently focused on building my psychological thriller series, The Auntie Diaries.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is The Other Auntie. It was inspired by real family dynamics I’ve seen over the years, especially how one person can control the narrative while everyone else adjusts around it. I wanted to explore what happens when that version of the truth starts to crumble.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if it’s unusual, but I write in pieces. I’ll get a line, a scene, or a moment and build around it instead of forcing a full chapter at once. I also read everything out loud to make sure it sounds natural.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King is my influence since I was young. I read IT when I was in 8th grade and it has stuck with me. Books that change the way you operate are my favorite. Carrie also is big for me because you have a morally gray area between victim and villain.
What are you working on now?
I’m continuing The Auntie Diaries series and expanding the world around these characters. Each book focuses on a different perspective, but they all connect back to the same core themes of truth, control, and consequences.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As an indie author in an ever changing social landscape, promotion changes often. I use social media and am working on building my email list. However, I am discovering the indie marketing landscape is friendlier and more vast than it used to be.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Finish the book. A lot of people get stuck trying to make it perfect before it’s done. You can fix something that exists. You can’t fix something you never finished.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write the truth, even if you have to hide it in fiction.
What are you reading now?
Right now I am letting my brain rest and love short stories. The latest one was The Doll’s House by Lisa Unger.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Continuing to build out my series and reaching more readers. I’m focused on consistency and creating stories that stay with people.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
God don’t like Ugly. Dreamcatcher and The Coldest Winter Ever.
