Thomas Elsdon leaves behind a safe career as a shipping clerk to join the great adventure of the Western Front, but the patriotic illusions of the war quickly sink into the mud of Flanders. He is forced to confront a terrifying reality: the war is not a noble endeavour, but a massive machine designed to consume human lives.
Thrust into the frontline, Thomas faces the horrors of chlorine gas, the blistering heat of the Somme, and the claustrophobic terror of underground mining warfare. He relies on a small group of comrades to survive the nightmare, leaning heavily on the pragmatic Jack Carpenter and watching over the fragile schoolteacher Johnson. They are all just components in a system that has completely forgotten the value of a life.
To keep his mind from fracturing, Thomas uses his sketchbook to record life in the trenches and the faces of the doomed. Through his drawings, he reclaims a sliver of humanity from a conflict that threatens to erase them all.

Hi all,
My name is Richard and I am the author of Ypres, as well as the ‘Interplanetary Empire of Great Britain’ series. I am a 33 year old English Teacher from the UK, who lives and works in Vietnam. I have a great interest in History, Politics, Music and Drama, and have always adored reading Historical Fiction and Science Fiction amongst others.
I recently starting writing after suffering an unfortunate and unexpected bereavement in which my younger brother died. It began as an escape from a raw emotional time and became something that I have enjoyed very much. I plan to continue writing and will be continuing my Sci-Fi series alongside occasional standalone works of Historical Fiction.
