Interview With Author Zachary Fleming
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m just a silly blurred from Memphis Tennessee who watched a lot of anime and superhero movies and cartoons growing up and I saw myself wanted to either be in them or make them. I’m glad to say I have now ridden two books and I’m ready to continue writing my third one.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of this book is Z-Force: Foundations. What inspired this book is my own personal growth and development. Just like Zavier, I had a past in Middle School that I hated myself for how I was moving and disrespectful of other people’s boundaries and I didn’t grow to realize who I was at that time and that realization hit me very hard when I grew up as an adult. Ever since I became an adult I’ve been making sure that I am a better person than who I used to be. This story is meant to represent that first step for character that resembles me to truly become something better than what he was before.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if this counts as a habit, but I have this thing where for whatever reason I didn’t notice that I accidentally forgot to type a word while writing a sentence out. Like for example, let’s say I write out ‘ he looked North, and he faced down the storm’, for whatever reason my brain thinks I wrote that out but what my hands actually wrote was ‘ he looked North, and he faced the storm’. I don’t truly understand why the message in my brain didn’t translate to my hands but it just does that and I have to double check everything just to make sure I didn’t forget something.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I will say the first jumper book really spoke to me even though I only really like the slice of Life portions in the first half and I didn’t really care for the terrorism base plot in the second half. I will reference some comic books and say the Injustice comic books from DC are major inspiration, the Superman Earth 1 novels trilogy, The ultimate Spider-Man comic book line from the original Ultimate marvel Universe, & The Scott Pilgrim comic book series as well. and I’ll even reference the Naruto manga even though I primarily watched it. it is still the original source material that influenced me the most.
What are you working on now?
I will be working on a third book to go into my superhero series that I call Vrontier and it will be about the character Amaia Flores/Solara. I’m very interested and intrigued on what I’ll do for her story considering I have her centered as like the Spider-Man of my universe who has that relatable heart that the world means And I can’t wait to write out and publish her origin story.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
For me it’s making the trailers for each book. I’ve always had a visual type of mindset when it comes to the content I want to make and I like taking advantage of the current technologies that help make that a thing and even finding ways to use my voice in each of the trailers .
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My main advice is to don’t be so stringent on perfection because that’s what held me up for most of my life from putting out the book series I wanted to write. I kept thinking the perfect moment is going to come until I finally stop thinking like that and decided it doesn’t matter if the moment is perfect or not. I only got so much time in life to live and I know I got stories. I want to tell and I have one to tell them now. Just put yourself out there and it won’t come to you and it’ll start flowing easier and easier the more you go.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
when I heard this quote I hear it from Steve Harvey, the comedian and TV host. I don’t completely agree with the percentage, but She would always quote ‘ life is 10% of what happens to you in 90% of what you deal with it’. for the most part I do believe in that and I’ve been dealt a bad hand and even allowed myself to keep dealing with those hands but sooner or later I got tired of how everything was making me feel and got tired of how I was portraying myself and I had to take action and become better than who I used to be.
What are you reading now?
I was rereading Scott philburn but now I’ve been trying to read more of the Legend of Zelda mangas because I’ve always been interested in that video game series but never just delve into it. and thanks to adaptation of Twilight Princess, now only did I start playing some of the video games, but I feel like I can call myself a Legend of Zelda fan and I can’t wait to read the rest of the mangas in that particular series.
What’s next for you as a writer?
The main thing is to keep building out my Foundation Saga for the Vrontier universe and then whenever I can expand it to other stories I got in my head.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
if I could, I’m bringing the entirety of the Injustice line of comic books, ultimate Spider-Man, And Scott Pilgrim. They bring me too much joy to put them down even if I’ve already read them.
