About AJ and the Incredible Fish by Paolo Mazzucato
Eleven-year-old AJ doesn’t care much for impossible stories and fancy dreams. He lives in the “real” world, where adventure is limited to schoolroom pranks, and hopes get trampled by broken promises. His trust in grownups and the stories they tell disappeared when his father left, and no fairy tale with a happy ending will be enough to make him believe again.
So, having to spend the weekend with his eccentric Grandpa on a ratty, old, Maui fishing boat, and listening to wild fish tales, is not AJ’s idea of a fun time. Grandpa starts right in with a tale of fantastic adventure, strange new places…and Old Gussie, an incredible fish that he and his two former shipmates, Riley and Marlin, began pursuing some 30 years ago. Livvy, an oddball girl living in the marina, is open to the notion, but AJ isn’t biting; he’s not falling for some far-fetched, impossible story.
But AJ will have to rethink the meaning of “impossible” when Grandpa casts off, renewing the quest for Old Gussie in a perilous voyage beyond the boundaries of imagination. Into the eye of a storm and across the high seas, through a prison break and chase through the desert, beyond the grasp of quagmires and sea queens…they journey, pursued by doubt and a shadowy, peg-legged pirate intent on keeping them from their prize.
And when all hope begins to fade, AJ must rediscover his willingness to take a chance again, and together with Livvy, to realize that the only real danger in life comes from never leaving the shore.
