Interview With Author Alex Carter
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Alex Carter, a DIY enthusiast and home improvement hobbyist who enjoys finding practical, creative solutions for everyday challenges. I love projects that make life easier, homes safer, and hobbies more rewarding. So far, I’ve written two books — Furniture Grippers for Hardwood Floors and Next Generation Doll Furniture. Both are designed to help readers create simple, affordable projects that really work in real homes.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Next Generation Doll Furniture. I was inspired to write it after seeing how much creativity and joy goes into miniature furniture making. Many people love crafting doll furniture but struggle to find modern, easy-to-follow designs that don’t require expensive tools. I wanted to share simple DIY methods that anyone can use to build beautiful, sturdy doll furniture with a personal touch — perfect for crafters, parents, or anyone who enjoys hands-on projects.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to work on multiple projects at once — I often have a few books in progress under my pen name, Alex Carter. Each one focuses on a different kind of DIY or creative project, so switching between them keeps my ideas fresh. I also test every project I write about in real life before including it in a book — that way, readers get tips that actually work, not just theory.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m inspired by authors who make creativity and craftsmanship accessible to everyone. Books from Bob Vila, The Family Handyman, and classic DIY guides have had a big influence on me. I also admire writers who combine practical advice with clear visuals and storytelling — they remind me that teaching is most powerful when it’s simple and hands-on. Those influences have shaped how I write my own books, focusing on real results that readers can see and feel.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a few new DIY and home improvement guides that expand on what readers enjoyed in my earlier books. One focuses on creative home organization ideas using recycled materials, and another explores easy woodworking projects for beginners. My goal is to keep sharing practical, affordable ways for people to improve their homes and express their creativity — no fancy workshop or expensive tools required.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The best way for readers to reach me is through my Amazon Author Page under the name Alex Carter. I always enjoy hearing from readers — especially those who’ve tried the projects in my books. You can also leave a comment or review on any of my titles; I often read and respond to feedback there.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start writing what you know, and share what you’ve actually experienced. Readers connect best with honesty and real-life results. Don’t wait until you think everything is perfect — the most important step is finishing your first book and learning from the process. Keep testing, improving, and writing more. Every book teaches you something new. Also, promote your work early — there are many great free tools and communities that can help your book reach readers without spending much. Most importantly, enjoy the journey and stay consistent.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard is: “Start small, but start now.”
It applies to everything — writing, creating, and DIY projects alike. You don’t need to have the perfect plan or all the tools; progress comes from taking that first step and learning as you go. Every great project, whether it’s building something by hand or writing a book, begins with the decision to simply begin. That mindset has helped me stay creative, productive, and motivated through every stage of the process.
What are you reading now?
Right now, I’m reading a mix of DIY and creative inspiration books. I’ve been enjoying The Handbuilt Home by Ana White — it’s full of clever, practical furniture projects that anyone can make. I’m also reading Atomic Habits by James Clear, which is great for building better routines and staying productive while working on multiple writing and DIY projects. I like to balance hands-on books with ones that keep me focused and motivated.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I plan to keep expanding my collection of DIY and home project books under the Alex Carter name. My next goal is to create a full series that covers different areas of hands-on living — from small-space organization to creative recycling and beginner woodworking. I’m also exploring adding video tutorials and printable project plans to give readers even more practical value. Writing, for me, is about sharing ideas that help people create something real, useful, and satisfying with their own hands.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d bring books that keep both my mind and hands busy. First, The SAS Survival Handbook by John ‘Lofty’ Wiseman — because it’s full of real-world skills that could actually keep me alive! Second, The Handyman’s Guide for its timeless practical knowledge about building and fixing things. Third, Walden by Henry David Thoreau — it’s a reminder of simplicity, nature, and finding peace in solitude. And finally, Atomic Habits by James Clear, because even on a desert island, staying motivated and disciplined would make all the difference.
