Interview With Author Amanda and Lisa-Marie Nelson and Potter
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Amanda and Lisa-Marie are a co-writing team of best friends who share imaginary worlds, including a short story, Shivers, published in Moments Between. Lisa Marie Potter (BIPOC) is a mom of four who grew up in Nottingham, England, and now resides in Alaska with her husband and golden retriever. Amanda Nelson grew up in Maryland and moved to Arizona, where she attended college and currently lives with her husband and four kids. Both women are members of the Author’s Guild, belong to a Manuscript Academy Podcast featured writing and critique group, and have a combined social media following -Twitter, Instagram, Threads, and TikTok- of over 23K. They attend writing conferences, Manuscript Academy classes, and are beta reading ninjas. They also review books on their socials, hike the Olympic National Park, and fight over the same fictional crushes.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Men In Books Aren’t Better is our debut contemporary romance. As romantics at heart, both of us loved the movie Pretty Woman and decided a gender-swapped version could be a great launching point. Taking that premise, we tweaked it and made it our own.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. As a writing duo, we have to coordinate schedules and have video chats to discuss and write our novels. Also, because we write in dual POV, each of us takes a character and writes as them. Sometimes, we work together, and sometimes, we swap chapters and discover the story along the way.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephenie Meyer was the one who got us into writing. We are both Twilight Saga book fans, and her stories inspired our creativity.
What are you working on now?
Currently, we are working through editing book two of the Plus One series. In between editing rounds, we’ve returned to our first manuscript-a time travel, YA speculative novel, making it dual POV.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As debut authors, we are trying many advertisement venues, and only time will tell which avenue will pay off.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing, keep learning, take criticism gracefully, and consider all suggestions, but go with your gut.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The same advice we suggest for new authors.
What are you reading now?
Lisa-Marie is reading To Catch a Killer by Sheryl Scarborough, and Amanda is reading Caraval by Stephanie Garber.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Our five-year goal is to complete the third book in the Plus One trilogy and publish our YA speculative novel.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Twilight series, Wuthering Heights, Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater
