Interview With Author Amber Dobkins
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Farm girl, mom, grandma, wife, healing practitioner, and author are a few of the titles I don. My family lives on a few acres in southern Idaho. We affectionately call our land Mystic Meadows, as we have learned much wisdom and acquired a lot of healing from tending to the land and animals.
After a few years of hardship, my husband and I started a healing business where we teach practices that help people heal emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and even physically.
Meditation and writing were a big part of my healing, leading me to become an author. I have three published books.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Sacred Legacy: Empowered Generational Healing.
I wrote this book with my mother and daughter to capture the perspective of three generations and the healing work we have incorporated into the family to provide a legacy of healthy relationships.
There is a big shift in consciousness that happens with each generation. At some point, we realize that we don't have to do things the way our parents did them. Not that they were wrong, but they were limited to what they knew at the time. Healing begins when we integrate with our authentic selves and honor the path that has brought us to where we are today. By doing this, we connect with the ancient wisdom that lies within each of us; the inheritance of our mothers, grandmothers, and so on. Reconnecting to the wisdom within allows us to be guided in life instead of doing things out of obligation. We restore meaning to our lives and find what is true for each of us while still honoring the path others choose.
We were inspired to write this book to help women look at the habits or traits within their family and see if they wanted to pass those patterns on to the next generation. The three of us noticed specific patterns we wanted to break within our family and consciously chose to go against the grain to find better ways of bonding. As we spoke about this topic with others, we noticed that many people struggle with family dynamics and healthy relationships.
Others were amazed to see three generations of women supporting and accepting each other for who they are. So we decided to write a book and share our story of healing.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I practice what I call meditative writing. It is a form of flow writing where I get out of my head and allow my heart to do the speaking. To practice this, I usually play some meditative music and just let my hand glide across an empty page. I don't think about what to write; I let it flow and then read it to see what comes through.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The book that inspired the most as a child was "Illusions" by Richard Bach. I love books that inspire new thought processes and that are able to change my perspective slightly. As an adult, I'm drawn to the self-help section with books such as, "Becoming Supernatural," "Rise Sister Rise," or "The Four Agreements."
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a workbook to accompany my recent book, "Sacred Legacy." Of course, I also have a few other book ideas floating around in my google docs. We will see which ideas actually come to life in the coming months.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
It may sound simple, and I'm sure it's been said one hundred times before, but getting your book in front of more people is the best method I've found. There are lots of ways to do that, and I believe each author needs to do what feels best to them.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Find a support group! Whether that be friends, a Facebook community, or a coach, surround yourself with people who encourage you to keep going. Author life can be pretty lonely sometimes, so make sure you're not isolating yourself.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
"Follow your heart."
What are you reading now?
"The 4-Hour Workweek" by Timothy Ferriss
I read many self-help books, but I also have some fun books in my library, one of them being "Firefly Lane" by Kristin Hannah.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I try to stay open to new opportunities, so I can't say for sure, but I imagine that I will write a few more books. My focus at this point in my career is to support new authors while they follow their dreams of writing a book. I'm creating a program that will offer healing, guidance, and tons of support for aspiring authors.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Oh boy! While pondering this, I find myself searching for the biggest books I own. But honestly, I think I would want an entertaining novel, probably one that has survival skills scattered throughout. I love "Rise Sister Rise" because it has entertaining stories but also contains meaningful rituals that I could practice. The last book I would choose is my manual on energy healing. It is jam-packed with practices, knowledge, and affirmations that might help keep me sane.
