Interview With Author Amy Meitz
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written hundreds of stories but I never thought of publishing. My childhood mentor was a bit of a fairy godmother and encouraged me to pursue a career in writing. I was always too busy or distracted to follow through.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Crushing Little Things was inspired by the town and street in which I grew up.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I was blessed with a wild imagination and a brain that never turns of. I typically sit down at my laptop and write for hours, sometimes forgetting to eat or sleep. My passion for sharing stories through prose runs so deep that I love every minute of writing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love the classic unreliable narrator. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman comes to mind. I also love The Catcher in the Rye by Salinger. Mostly I love discovering raw, compelling memoirs by broken indie authors.
What are you working on now?
I am writing two books which take place in the same universe as Crushing Little Things. A backstory and a sequel or coming.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still learning about self promotion. I am a ghost when it comes to social media. I prefer connecting in real life but I realize I need to grow an online presence. My book was featured on a couple of Booktoks and I am hoping that will bring in new readers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write about what you know and what you are passionate about. Character development is the most important thing for me.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t begin statements with “you always” or “you never” when talking to loved ones. Being told to close my windows during a tornado also saved me a lot of grief.
What are you reading now?
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Once I finish the two books I am writing at present, I might put together a collection of short stories.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
One Thousand and One Nights, The Exorcist and I would probably pick up a random novel from an author I’ve never hear of.
