Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been a freelance writing and author-in-training for a long time. Writing is the only thing that has ever made me happy career-wise. I have always been a fan of romance (though I read all types of books), and writing it was a natural progression for me. So far, I have written only about medieval times. The time period is intriguing to me and some of my favorite books are from this era. I have one published book, “A Stormy Knight” with Astraea Press, and have signed a contract for my second, “Redefining Rayne.” I am a mom and a wife, and I live in upstate New York.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A Stormy Knight was my experiment. I wanted to see if I could do it. I wanted to see if I could write characters people could relate to, events that kept the pages turning, and about a time period I could not see with my own eyes. I was inspired by a few of my favorites books written about medieval times. I have successfully traced my family tree back that far through my grandmother’s family line, and that too motivated me. I love the time period. I have always wanted to write a book, but many attempts fell short. This time, I did it.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I know a lot of writers listen to music when they write. I can’t. However, I put on Netflix and find “McLeod’s Daughters” and watch it while I write. I can’t explain why it helps but it does. I have watched the series at least five times through (all 8 seasons!) and I still put it on. Thankfully, I haven’t stolen any story lines or I’d have to stop. There is just something about it that puts me in the right mood to write.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are so many! I have read books which still come to mind now, but I can’t remember who wrote them or the titles. Some writers, like Anne Rice and Kathleen Woodiwiss, are long time favorites, but there are so many. In general, good writing is always an influence on me.
What are you working on now?
I’m going through edits for my next historical romance, Redefining Rayne. In this one, I really wanted to to show how strong a woman can be, even when she feels she’s weak. However, it is tricky because I do not want my characters to be out of line with their time period. So, I had to let her grow as she would have then, not now, but still write a character that women today can relate to. I put poor Rayne through quite a bit, but in the end I hope it strengthens the love story.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I wish I had an answer for this question. It’s really hit or miss and I have not found one definitive thing that I can truly say works for book promotion. I use Facebook, Twitter, and I have a blog on my website. I interact on Goodreads to a point, and try to find inexpensive advertising options. By nature, I am an introvert, so promotions are hard for me, and nothing seems to stand out as a resounding, clear-cut option as the best.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Oh goodness, yes. If you really want to write, do not stop. Never for a moment believe you know all you should know. Study, research, ask questions, and never stop learning. Never be afraid to ask for help! If you plan to publish as an indie writer, spend the money on a professional editor. Take criticism and learn from it. It can hurt, but it will make you a better writer. Also, finish your book. Just do it. If you want to get it out there, research before you send it to a publisher or you are setting yourself up for disappointment. You could have the next best seller but it won’t get published if you send it to the wrong type of publishing house. Keep writing, keep learning, and do not give up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
As far as writing, I think it is to write the story you wish you could read. In life in general, always trust your intuition.
What are you reading now?
I am not reading anything at the moment. I read in spurts. I can’t actively read something else when I’m writing, and I have a WIP going at the moment. I finished a book called The Deception of Devin Miller by Kelly Martin, last week.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve started a sequel for A Stormy Knight. One secondary character in particular popped out of the pages for me and she needs her own story. I’m still in early stages yet with only a few chapters done, and I’m not entirely sure how I am going to get to the ending I’ve envisioned.
What is your favorite book of all time?
As a romance writer, I should probably give you the name of a romance novel, but I can’t. I have five or six absolute favorites in that genre, but my all time favorite book is Interview With a Vampire by Anne Rice. I am not entirely sure why, but I think this was the first book that truly sucked me into another world so much so that I would forget where I was when reading it.
