Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have just published my first book which is a university essay writing guide. I work in a university helping scientists to apply for research funding. Winning grants to carry out scientific research is very competitive, and academics find it difficult to explain their science niche to non-experts and make a compelling argument to receive funding. I help them to communicate why their area of research is so important and their idea is worth supporting!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first book is called 7 Steps to Your Best Essay. I finished my MA a couple of years ago and felt like I’d really nailed down a good system for essay writing by the time I’d finished. It seemed a shame to let that knowledge just sit unused in my brain so I decided to get it on paper.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think so! I definitely prefer writing on paper while I get my ideas formed. When I’m editing I have to be curled up with my work on my lap – I do this with funding proposals in the office too which gets me some funny looks from time to time!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I studied English at university so this could turn into a very long list! So if I had to just pick one it would have to be Toni Morrison – her writing is so beautiful, even when she covers the most harrowing subject matter. She will be missed!
What are you working on now?
Before I get distracted with a new project I want to dedicate some time to marketing book number one. I’ll be continuing to publish posts on my blog write-fly.com – this will be much easier now that the book is finished.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Time will tell on this one! I drive traffic to my blog via Pinterest, but I’m branching out into some new methods with the book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just get it written, finished and out there.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never accept unsolicited advice..!
What are you reading now?
The Essays of Virginia Woolf 1904-1912
What’s next for you as a writer?
Plenty of blogging until my next big idea is fully formed!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Song of Solomon – Toni Morrison
The Norton Anthology of Poetry
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – J.K. Rowling
