Interview With Author Ana Hod
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I spent over 15 years working in the fast-paced world of advertising, where I learned how to tell stories that capture attention and emotion in just a few seconds. It was an exciting and demanding career that taught me a lot about human behavior, creativity under pressure, and the power of words. But after years of crafting campaigns for other people’s brands, I began to feel a growing urge to tell my own stories — the ones that had been quietly simmering in the background all along. That’s what ultimately inspired me to write my first book, The Spark That Went Missing, a steamy romantic comedy about love, relationships and the messy, magical ways we reconnect with ourselves and others.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled The Spark That Went Missing. It’s a witty and steamy romantic comedy that explores what happens after the “happily ever after.” The story follows Clara and James, who once shared a whirlwind romance full of passion, laughter, and chemistry that could light up a city. Fifteen years later, they’re married with a young son, juggling careers, chaos, and the quiet distance that can creep into long-term relationships.
I was inspired to write it because I’ve always been fascinated by what happens to love once the initial spark fades — how couples evolve, reconnect, and rediscover each other amid real life’s messiness. I wanted to write a romance that was both sexy and honest, one that celebrates not just falling in love, but staying in love when things get complicated.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Oh, absolutely! I have a few… let’s call them “eccentric” habits. For one, I can only write when my desk is perfectly messy — it’s like chaos sparks creativity. And I have this habit of writing the steamiest scenes while sipping ridiculously strong herbal tea!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’ve been influenced by a mix of authors who excel at storytelling, humor, and emotional depth. On the romance side, I love the witty banter and chemistry in books by Sophie Kinsella and Helen Fielding — they taught me how to blend humor with heart. Beyond romance, I admire storytellers who create unforgettable characters and immersive worlds, because they remind me that even in a rom-com, characters need depth and a story that lingers after the last page.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on my second novel, which follows four very different couples as they navigate love, lust, and all the hilarious – and steamy – challenges that come with it. Think of it as a rollercoaster of romance, with plenty of laughs, awkward moments, and yes… a few heated scenes that might make readers blush!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I usually direct readers to my landing page (bit.ly/436H1KE), where they can leave their email to get updates and sneak peeks about my upcoming books. It’s my way of keeping in touch with the people who are most excited about my stories.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Honestly, as a new author myself, I don’t have a lot of “expert” advice to give. The one thing I can say is this: write about what you love. If your heart is in the story, it will shine through on the page, and that’s what readers connect with. Everything else – publishing, marketing, finding your audience – comes later. For me, the most important thing was just to start writing the story I couldn’t stop thinking about.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever heard is simple but powerful: “Follow what lights you up.” It’s a reminder to pursue the things that genuinely excite and inspire you, rather than what feels safe or expected. For me, it’s what led me from a long career in advertising to writing my first novel, a leap that was both scary and thrilling, but ultimately so worth it.
What are you reading now?
Right now, I’m revisiting a classic I’ve always loved: Emma by Jane Austen. I’m also juggling a few contemporary reads on the side, but there’s something so comforting and endlessly entertaining about returning to a story you know and adore. It’s like catching up with an old friend.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully, continuing to write books that people love and relate to. I want to keep creating stories that make readers laugh, swoon, and maybe even see a little bit of themselves in the characters. My goal is to keep exploring love, life, and all the messy, funny, and steamy moments in between
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I’d want a mix of comfort, inspiration, and pure escapism. First, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen — I could reread it endlessly and still fall in love with Elizabeth and Darcy. Then, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern for its magic and immersive storytelling. I’d also bring Bossypants by Tina Fey for laughs and a reminder not to take life too seriously. And finally, maybe a romance I love, like Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella, because a little swoon-worthy fun is essential, even on a desert island!
