Interview With Author André Varela
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is André Varela, and I am a writer from Portugal. I live with my wife and two cats, Latte and Luigi. Blindspot is my first published book.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My last book is called Blindspot. I have always loved stories of abandoned places and small towns. This book was very inspired by the concept that the most innocent places hide terrible secrets and what we do to hide them.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Oh yea… I usually choose a song for a particular writing project and I listen to it on repeat until it’s finished. Drives my wife insane.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King was always a big influence on my writing and the themes chosen. Brent Weeks, Dean Koontz, Richard Laymom and Bandon Sanderson are big influences too. I gravitate a lot from horror to fantasy.
What are you working on now?
I am working on a book called The Boy Who Was Death. It’s a very different book from Blindspot (smaller too), but also lighter despite the title.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still new to this, but I think X and Instagram are very resourceful tools for writers to get creative.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep writing even if you think it’s not good. When I finished my first draft I though ‘Dam, this is bad.’ But if you put it out there first, you can polish it later. The hard part is pulling it from inside your head into paper.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write for yourself.
What are you reading now?
I am reading Boys in the Valley by Philip Fracassi.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Just keep writing, putting all these crazy stories in my head to paper.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Stand by Stephen King
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
The Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks (cheating I know)
The Stake by Richard Laymon
