Interview With Author Andrew D. Thompson
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a former professional athlete who competed in squash and long time high performance coach. I was also an executive in the hospitality industry. My passion has always been the mind and how to perform at our best. This was tested in 2016 when I had a near-death experience from a rare illness that left me bedridden over 22 hours a day for nearly 5 months. It took me over 8 years to recover and heal myself, which I did through a specialized diet and way of eating that I slowly developed to regain my health.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
A High-Performing Mind is my first and current book. It was inspired from over three decades of working with elite performers in sport, business, and life. There were methods and ways to get the best out of ourselves that high-performers used and responded well to consistently that were tried and tested countless times with great success, so I wanted to share these with others to help people recover and overcome their adversity and learn how to be at their best so they could achieve their goals and live a better, happier, and more fulfilling life.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think I do, I enjoy writing, I’m lucky that most times it flows and I have tons of ideas, it’s more about identifying the ones that people connect most with for me.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I purposely don’t currently read much in my area of writing so that my ideas and the way I express them is different and not part of a collective way to think. Books that have influenced me are Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach and many books by Don Miguel Ruiz.
What are you working on now?
I am working on A High-Performing Mind for Teens – a version of my book, which I hope to get out by the end of September.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That is still up for debate. Amazon ads and meta ads are both effective, but not cheap. I’m still searching for that high-return method.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I think listening to your reviews is important and making adjustments to your book based on reader feedback is a key way to make sure your ratings are headed in the right direction (up).
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
That’s a hard question to answer. My dad always told me to work hard and taught me discipline and to this day that sticks with me and is a foundational approach to anything I do. I think learning to accept what goes wrong and to quickly move to constructive solutions is the best way I can think of to live and achieve your goals as quickly as possible.
What are you reading now?
I’m not reading anything for myself at the moment. Unusually, I don’t advocate reading a thousand books. I think knowing the theories are not going to get you anywhere in life. You have to take concrete actions and follow a systematic plan to achieve your goals. That’s how I live and what A High-Performing Mind is all about: get out there and take action, do the tried and tested things that are going to get you somewhere. People are always looking for that shiny new concept, it’s a waste of time, there is no “silver bullet” solutions. Get out there and put the time and effort in daily and in a year’s time, you will be much further ahead.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Complete A High-Performing Mind for Teens and continue to put the time and effort in daily to promote my work.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Jonathan Livingston Seagull for sure. The Voice of Knowledge by Don Miguel Ruiz and A High-Performing Mind for sure. ๐
