
Interview With Author Andrew Figgest
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am 68 years of age and retired now after working in the disability/injury sector here in New Zealand for many years. I worked for a Government agency for many years before working privately doing 1-1 interviews and reports on injured clients. I was sponsored by ACC-the Government agency to attend University in both Auckland and Wellington leaving with tertiary qualifications in Health Science. Married ( 44 years), 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I have just completed my first literary fiction book-‘ The Lives of 4 Boxers from South London During the 1960’s. The inspiration came from the fact i was born in London, UK and have always been interested in English culture, particularly changes since WW2.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No, although i’m at my best in the mornings
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I mainly read auto-biographies of folk in the music or movie industries. Although my prose is nowhere near his, i’m always going back to Bob Dylan’s ‘ Chronicles’ book, a masterpiece imo.
What are you working on now?
I’ve just started scribbling a storyline as a sequel to ‘ The Lives of 4 Boxers in South London’ as above
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook -various incl Amazon book promotions
Do you have any advice for new authors?
It can be a long lonely journey, but persevere. Also the key is in editing
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There is no failure in trying.
What are you reading now?
‘ Charlie’s Good Tonight’ a biography on the late Rolling Stones drummer, Charlie Watts.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Well my first book, a memoir was published by ‘ New Author Publishing’,UK 6 months ago and their marketing campaign should kick in soon.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1/ Chronicles-Bob Dylan
2/ ‘ On the Road’-Jack Kerouac
3/ ‘ Who Are You’-Pete Townsend
