Interview With Author Angeline George
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have only published one book so far, but have been writing books for years, ever since I was young.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled “Stargazer” as it is the super hero alias of the main character. I first came up with it four years ago and don’t know specifically why I chose it other than it is the name of an electric fish.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t have one singular place where I write. Anywhere I’m able to sit in my house, if I feel like it, I’ll sit there. As long as there aren’t any major distractions, I can write anywhere.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I grew up reading C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Since I attended a classical high school, I also loved reading Dante, Mary Shelley and Fyodor Dostoevsky. Outside of school, my favorite authors include Leigh Bardugo, James Joyce and Joanne Harris.
What are you working on now?
After just finishing writing “Stargazer”, I’m taking a break right now and working on a few personal novellas that I probably won’t publish. I find I always need to be writing, even if I don’t plan on publishing.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
As I am self-publishing and new to the scene, I find it the easiest to just look up any website that does free advertising.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Make sure your book has a purpose! Although writing for fun is great in short stints, in order for you to be truly involved in a big project, there must be a reason “why” and a lesson told through it. Once I realized this, I found it much easier to convince myself to write even when I didn’t feel like it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
This is a hard question, as I feel I’ve never gotten told advice and just witnessed other people’s actions and learned from them. I would say the life lesson of not following the crowd and not being afraid of being loud about your ideas and opinions has been the best advice for me personally. You shouldn’t write for others; write what you want to and if others enjoy it, it’s all for the better.
What are you reading now?
I am currently rereading The Lord of the Rings for a college course while also balancing rereading Chocolat by Joanne Harris and starting The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I want to focus on writing more “adult” content in the sense that I want to grapple with darker themes and not shy away from making characters convoluted and as human as possible.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Definitely, Chocolat by Joanne Harris, as it is a comfort read to me at this point as well as Dante’s Divine Comedy; it’s a decently long read and I would never get bored dissecting the verses. Finally, The Brothers Karamazov, as it is also long and such an interesting read.
