Interview With Author Anıl Kalay
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello, I’m Anıl. I am 34 years old, and I think the best word to describe myself would be ‘dreamer’. Currently, I have one published book, but a sequel and two new stories are waiting to come to life.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is called The Halley Effect: Vulture’s Triangle. It’s the first book in the series and is about fears turning into power. I think it was inspired by my own fears. I don’t remember exactly because this idea came to my mind 12 years ago when I was a university student.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to visualize everything in my mind when I write. That’s why I usually write while listening to John Williams’s film scores. This helps me see a lot of details in that moment.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Like everyone our age, I was also a fan of the Harry Potter series. But I would say I was influenced more by D&D role-playing games.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I am working on the second book in The Halley Effect series. I am aiming for it to be on the shelves this summer. Right after that, I will take a short break from the series and start writing a completely different adventure.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
In the last few months, I’ve learned the hard way that promoting a book is harder than writing one. Actually, if you have a budget for it, there are many methods available. However, if you plan to promote with a zero-dollar budget, Reddit is the most effective site for my book.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
To be honest, I don’t think I’m the right person to answer this.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The most helpful advice I received was to write down the character’s entire backstory somewhere, even if the reader will never know it, and to know everything about them.
What are you reading now?
These days, I have almost no time to read. However, whenever I get the chance, I’m trying to finish the Star Wars and Sherlock Holmes series.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My biggest goal is to ensure that the worlds I create are known and talked about by other people.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I think a world atlas and a survival guide would be the most useful. If I’m not allowed to cheat, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone always keeps me engaged in terms of world-building. The first book of The Walking Dead also impressed me regarding hiding the main character until the last minute.
