Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
A Texan by birth, I’ve lived on both coasts and a few places in-between. I’ve been a sales clerk, barista, secretary, waitress, technical editor and writer. I’ve volunteered as a museum docent, cause writer, wildlife sanctuary guide and animal caregiver.
I’ve written six books and three series, fiction and non-fiction. Not all are published yet.
The other day, a friend reminded me that I used to joke about writing smut and I had to shake my head. My new novel actually started out as erotica, but about 50,000 words in, I changed my mind.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
METTLE was inspired by research I did for a non-fiction book. It tells two stories: the unfolding of an aberrant relationship and the transformation that induces in the female lead.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Early morning is when the muse visits. I wake up around 4:00 am, which gives me a block of time to write without disturbance. My cat, Mia, has trained me to work with her perched on my shoulders. She seems to know when I need to take a break and will pull my glasses off at those times.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
When I find an author or character that moves me, I’ll go on long reading benders. I always take Koonst or Child on trips. I discovered the Outlander series one winter and devoured the first seven tomes one after another; when I looked up, it was spring. I was riveted by Flynn and Hawkins, as well as Paris and Bleeker.
What are you working on now?
Parts 2 through 6 of METTLE. I’m tweaking a few scenes, pushing each manuscript through production and scheduling promotions. Also getting some technical issues roped and tied.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
We shall see. I’m trying a number of different things.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be bold, go deep, stay teachable and let it rip.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Consider the source.
What are you reading now?
GOODREADS CRACKED
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve got several short stories outlined and a secret project with a creative partner that’s been simmering for a good, long while.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Complete Works of Dean Koonst, William Faulkner, Herman Melville, Jane Austen.
