Interview With Author Anna Sapphire
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
If you had told younger me that I’d become an author, I would’ve laughed, rolled my eyes, and gone back to avoiding books like the plague. But fate had other plans. One day, I picked up Malory Towers, and boom—my world changed. Suddenly, I was daydreaming about plots, making up characters in my head, and coming up with dramatic scenarios that made my life seem way more exciting than it actually was.
Then, I discovered Wattpad. And let me tell you, that was my villain origin story (but in a good way). My brain went into overdrive, churning out stories like a popcorn machine. Eventually, Strawberries and Cigarettes was born, inspired by the song of the same name by Troye Sivan. And after that, I couldn’t stop.
So far, I’ve written three books—Strawberries and Cigarettes, Scarlett Rose and Love at Sunset—all filled with clean, wholesome romance, emotions, and just the right amount of heartbreak to make you feel something (but not too much, I promise!). I write about love that makes your heart race, characters who feel like home, and moments that stay with you long after the last page.
Outside of writing, I love dancing (practically can’t live without it), singing (in my not so professional voice), and watching movies while eating way more snacks than necessary. I believe in spontaneous adventures, laughing till your stomach hurts, and chasing dreams, even when they seem impossible. Being a self-published author is a wild ride, but with amazing readers supporting my stories, I know the journey is going to be worth it!
If you ever read my books, please come scream about them with me on Instagram (@author.annasapphire). I’d love to hear your thoughts, favorite moments, or just general bookish fangirling.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Ah, my latest book is Love at Sunset! And honestly? I wish I had a deep, poetic answer about its inspiration, but the truth is… the plot just popped into my head one day like an uninvited guest, and I had no choice but to welcome it.
I won’t spill any spoilers (because where’s the fun in that?), but let’s just say Love at Sunset perfectly vibes with “Cruel Summer” by Taylor Swift. Drama? Check. Intensity? Double check. A love story that makes you want to scream into your pillow? Absolutely.
Oh, and maybe—just maybe—race cars had something to do with it. But you’ll have to read it to find out. Buckle up, it’s going to be a ride!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Unusual? Oh, absolutely. Too many to count!
For starters, I don’t have a fancy, color-coded writing schedule like some super-organized authors. Nope—I let my brain wander freely, daydreaming like a main character in a coming-of-age movie. Then, when the perfect scene randomly strikes (usually at the worst possible moment), I scramble to write it down like my life depends on it.
And let’s talk about writer’s block. If my writing journey were a romance novel, writer’s block and I would have a full-on enemies-to-lovers arc. It shows up uninvited, ruins my mood, makes me doubt my entire existence, and then—right when I’m about to give up—it suddenly decides to shower me with brilliant ideas. Toxic, right? But we make it work.
Inspiration? Oh, that comes from binge-watching rom-coms, listening to emotionally devastating songs, and occasionally staring at my ceiling, questioning my life choices. And speaking of struggles, being an indie author is so tough that I sometimes think about quitting—until my little brother (aka my personal cheerleader) reminds me why I started in the first place. He hates books, especially romance, but still supports me, and honestly, that’s the best kind of love.
Oh, and here’s my most chaotic habit: Sometimes, I get irrationally jealous that my female main characters have such exciting love lives while I’m out here…well, not. So naturally, I start plotting ways to replace them and claim the male lead for myself. Why aren’t book boyfriends real?!
So yeah, my writing process is a mix of chaos, daydreaming, and mild existential crises—but somehow, it works!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Honestly? Before diving into the world of Wattpad, I hadn’t read many novels. But once I discovered Wattpad—oh boy—I went on a reading spree like my life depended on it. I’ve devoured tons of books there, and let me tell you, every single one of them was amazing!
If we’re talking about a specific novel, I did recently read Ana Huang’s Twisted Love—strictly for research purposes, of course (wink, wink). Let’s just say I may or may not have finished it in two days. Totally normal, right?
As for authors influencing me… not really. My writing has always been fueled by my own dreams, that tiny flicker of hope that love actually exists, and my tendency to romanticize life even when I’m just drinking iced coffee alone. That’s what truly inspires my books.
What are you working on now?
A series—one that’s packed with chaos, hidden feelings, jaw-dropping twists, and secrets that could change everything. And maybe… just maybe… some rules are about to be broken. Ahem. I hate giving spoilers!
Oh, and did I just casually drop the news that this series is a Taylor Swift edition? Oops. My bad. But let’s be real—nothing screams romance, heartbreak, and epic love stories like a Swift-inspired series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Ah, book promotion—where I turn into a full-time marketer, graphic designer, and maybe even a wannabe filmmaker. My go-to method? Making aesthetic and eye-catching posts using Canva and posting them on Instagram. Seriously, Canva is a lifesaver—I might as well add “graphic designer” to my resume at this point.
I also love using Pinterest for book promotion (because who doesn’t love a good aesthetic book teaser?), and I sometimes post videos on YouTube. Making trailers for my books is a hard yet so worth it process. At this rate, I might just film a whole movie myself
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Believe in yourself. Seriously, that annoying little voice in your head saying, “This story is stupid, no one’s gonna like it, writing is a waste of time”—yeah, ignore it. Instead, write louder, dream bigger, and work harder. Writing is basically a superpower—you get to create whole worlds, bring characters to life, and make readers feel things they never expected. That’s magic.
So if you’ve been gifted this power, use it! And hey, if you ever need advice, motivation, or just someone to scream about fictional characters with—I got you!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The best advice I’ve ever received came from a secret dear friend of mine—someone who always had the right words when I felt lost. They told me, “You have the power to create worlds full of love, emotions, and stories that will stay in people’s hearts. That’s your strength—never let go of it.” And honestly? That stuck with me.
But if we’re talking threats as motivation, my little brother wins. He once told me, “If you don’t write, I’m gonna strangle you.” Gotta love that little troublemaker—my personal cheerleader who doesn’t even like books but still forces me to keep going.
What are you reading now?
Oh, I wish I had time to read! But at the moment, I’m absolutely drowning in manuscript pages, edits, and the never-ending chaos of being an indie author. If you count rereading my own drafts for the hundredth time as reading, then yeah, that’s what I’m stuck with right now!
What’s next for you as a writer?
Going to New York! …Okay, just kidding (for now). Honestly, I’m just letting life surprise me—whether it’s a new book idea popping into my head at 3 AM or finally getting that dream opportunity. But one thing’s for sure—I’ll keep writing, keep dreaming, and keep chasing the stories that refuse to let me sleep!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
First off, I’d probably panic for a solid five minutes—then remember I brought books and be fine. My top picks? Scarlett Rose and Love at Sunset, because, hello, I wrote them, and even I still get surprised by the twists sometimes! And, of course, Haunting Adeline and Hunting Adeline because let’s be real—Zade Meadows is the only stalker I’d willingly take to a deserted island.
