About Around the World on a Dime and a Prayer by James C. Jensen
In the 1970s, before the internet connected us all 24/7, I pointed my thumb eastward, caught rides from California to Florida and commenced on a six-year, around the world adventure. In Florida, I joined an Aussie crew and set sail on a yacht destined for Australia. After a spell in Oz, I made my way to Bangkok and then overland to Europe. Along the way I hobnobbed with famous politicians, soaked in the beauty and appreciated the historical significance of the people and places encountered. And it is this appreciation of the places visited that makes the book special. Someone once commented the book is more about these places than it is about me, and that is true. The joys I experiences were balanced, however, by sickness and the constant need for cash. I arrived in Germany sick and broke. After a year working in a factory and recovering, I set off for what was supposed to be a quick trip before returning home but turned into six-months in Israel and another year in a rural German village. At times funny, at times philosophical, Around the World on a Dime and a Prayer chronicles a rare adventure, one that is no longer possible.
