Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a writer/poet/nurse/herbalist living in Charlotte, NC. I have not been formally trained as a writer but have had a pen in my hand since very young. I have collaborated on several books of poetry and have published 2 books of my own.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is “Life Is Still Good” and it is a story about some of the most difficult times in my life. I was inspired to share after a good friend encouraged me that my story should be told. The original manuscript was completed 4 years ago and I did not publish it out of fear. But, after some hesitation, I moved forward in publishing this year.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I often write in my head, meaning that I have formulated the words, paragraphs, the “feel” of the text in my head long before I actually sit down to my laptop.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Nikki Giovanni, Toni Morrison, Dr. Suess, Maya Angelou, Walter Mosley, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Sister Souljah…
What are you working on now?
I am brainstorming on a few concepts, a biography about my grandmother, or a book filled with hilarious family stories and history. I also blog pretty frequently so we will see.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still learning how to market unfortunately. I am such an artist that promotion seems laborious.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing and stay true to yourself!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Strive to be better today than you were yesterday.
What are you reading now?
“The Isis Papers” by Dr. Frances Cress Welsing and “A Hungry Heart” by Gordon Parks.
What’s next for you as a writer?
More promotion, more books, and more adventures!
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Midnight Series by Sister Souljah. Her books read like movies and I could never tire of any of them.
