Interview With Author Asia Akpe
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello, I'm thrilled to introduce myself! I'm a Nigerian author currently living in the USA. My journey as a writer has been a remarkable one, fueled by my deep love for reading and my fascination with life. I believe that storytelling has the power to bridge cultures and connect people across the world.
As of now, I've just published my very first book. It's a project that's close to my heart, reflecting my experiences and passions. Writing this book has been an incredible journey of self-discovery and creative expression, and I can't wait to share it with the world.
While this is my debut novel, I'm already brimming with ideas for future literary endeavors. Stay tuned for more stories and adventures from my pen, as I continue to explore the intersection of culture, technology, and human connections in the world of literature.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The title of my latest book is "Vain Shackles." This book is a reflection of the struggles and victories that shape our lives. It's a deeply personal exploration of the human experience, inspired by the resilience I've witnessed in the face of adversity, both in my own life and in the lives of those around me.
"Vain Shackles" delves into the notion that we often carry burdens that seem insurmountable, shackles that society or circumstance place upon us. Yet, within these struggles, there is incredible strength and the potential for triumph. It's a celebration of the human spirit's ability to break free from the chains of adversity and emerge stronger, wiser, and victorious.
I wanted to tell stories that resonate with people from all walks of life, stories that inspire and empower readers to overcome their own challenges. This book is my way of sharing those stories, and I hope it serves as a source of hope and encouragement for everyone who reads it.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Indeed, I do have a few writing habits that some might find unusual. Writing is a deeply personal and creative process, and we authors often develop unique routines that help us tap into our creativity. Here are a couple of my writing quirks:
1. **Late-Night Inspiration:** I find that my most creative ideas often come to me late at night when the world is quiet and still. So, I've developed a habit of keeping a notebook by my bedside to jot down these sudden bursts of inspiration. It can be a bit unusual to wake up in the middle of the night to scribble down ideas, but it's been quite fruitful for my writing process.
2. **Tech and Tea:** Given my passion for technology, I have a particular fondness for writing on my computer, often with a soothing cup of tea nearby. It's almost like a ritual for me—sipping tea as I type away on my keyboard. It helps me focus and get into a creative flow.
3. **Immersive Music:** I enjoy listening to instrumental music while writing. However, I don't just pick any background music; I choose music that aligns with the mood and tone of the scene I'm working on. This can lead to some eclectic playlists, from classical to electronic, depending on the story's atmosphere.
4. **Research Adventures:** When my writing involves exploring new cultures or places, I tend to immerse myself in extensive research. This often leads me down fascinating rabbit holes, uncovering details and stories that may or may not make it into the final manuscript. It's a bit like going on an adventure within my own writing.
These habits may be a bit unconventional, but they've become integral to my writing process, helping me find inspiration and stay connected to the stories I create.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
As an author with a deep love for reading, I've been fortunate to be influenced by a wide range of authors and books from diverse genres and backgrounds. Here are a few that have left a lasting impact on me:
1. **Chinua Achebe:** A fellow Nigerian author, Achebe's novel "Things Fall Apart" is a masterpiece of African literature. His ability to craft stories that explore culture, identity, and the human condition has been a profound influence on my own writing.
2. **Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie:** Adichie's works, including "Half of a Yellow Sun" and "Americanah," resonate with me on multiple levels. Her storytelling prowess and her ability to tackle complex themes of identity and diaspora have inspired my own exploration of these topics.
3. **George Orwell:** Orwell's "1984" and "Animal Farm" are powerful works of dystopian fiction that have shaped my interest in the intersection of technology, society, and politics. His ability to craft thought-provoking narratives is something I aspire to in my own writing.
4. **Ray Bradbury:** Bradbury's imaginative and poetic style, as seen in "Fahrenheit 451" and "The Martian Chronicles," has influenced my approach to blending technology and storytelling. His ability to create vivid, otherworldly landscapes has left a mark on my creative process.
5. **Isaac Asimov:** As a tech enthusiast, I've always admired Asimov's ability to explore complex scientific concepts through fiction. His "Foundation" series, in particular, has inspired me to incorporate technological themes into my narratives.
6. **Octavia E. Butler:** Butler's groundbreaking science fiction works, such as "Kindred" and the "Parable" series, have opened new horizons for me in terms of exploring diverse perspectives, social commentary, and speculative fiction.
7. **J.K. Rowling:** Rowling's "Harry Potter" series has had a profound impact on my love for storytelling and world-building. Her ability to create a rich, immersive fictional universe has been a significant influence on my own desire to craft intricate settings.
These authors and their works have all played a role in shaping my writing style, themes, and the stories I aspire to tell. Their ability to captivate readers and address profound themes continues to inspire me in my literary journey.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I'm fully immersed in my next writing project, and I couldn't be more excited about it. This new endeavor takes me into the realms of speculative fiction, where I'm exploring the intersection of technology, culture, and humanity in a rapidly changing world.
Without giving away too much, I can tell you that the story revolves around a group of characters who find themselves in a world where advanced technology has both transformed and challenged the very essence of what it means to be human. It delves into questions of identity, ethics, and the consequences of our technological pursuits.
As with any writing project, it's a journey of self-discovery and creative exploration. I'm diving deep into research, brainstorming, and the crafting of characters and worlds that I hope will captivate and provoke thought in my readers.
I can't wait to share more about this project as it evolves, and I'm looking forward to the day when it finds its way into the hands of readers who share my passion for storytelling and the ever-evolving landscape of technology and culture. Stay tuned for more updates!

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Choosing only a few books to take to a desert island is a challenging task for an avid reader like me, but here are four books I would bring:
1. **"The Complete Works of William Shakespeare":** Shakespeare's works are a treasure trove of human drama, wit, and timeless themes. With his plays and sonnets, I'd have a world of storytelling and profound insights to explore.
2. **"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams:** This classic science fiction comedy would provide much-needed humor and escapism on a desert island. Adams' wit and satire are a delight to revisit.
3. **"The Lord of the Rings" by J.R.R. Tolkien:** This epic fantasy trilogy offers not only a gripping adventure but also a richly detailed world filled with diverse characters and profound themes of heroism, friendship, and the battle between good and evil.
4. **"Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari:** This non-fiction book offers a deep dive into the history of our species, providing intellectual stimulation and insights into the human condition. It would keep my mind engaged during long days on the island.
These selections provide a mix of genres, themes, and literary styles to keep me entertained, enlightened, and perhaps even inspired as I navigate life on a desert island.
