Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am the author of four adult non-fiction books: Into Africa: A Personal Journey; Will That Be Cash or Cuffs? Into Africa: The Return, and College Life of a Retired Senior. I have also published three children’s picture books: Nosey Charlie Comes to Town; Nosey Charlie Goes to Court; and Nosey Charlie Chokes on a Wiener. I’m an award-winning short-story writer and have contributed stories to several anthologies, including Human Kindness; Canadian Voices, and Wordscape. I’ve published articles in More of Our Canada; Adelaide; InTouch, and Green Print magazines. I love movies and own a collection of most of the Oscar-winning Best Pictures, starting from 1927!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is College Life of a Retired Senior. I was inspired to write it because I persevered despite all the obstacles I faced returning to school as a senior citizen.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I’m in the zone, I write into the wee hours of the morning.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Maya Angelou inspired me with her memoir, The Heart of a Woman. I love her straightforward writing style and enjoyed her story.

What are you working on now?
I am working on my first novel. It is a thriller. If all goes well, it should be released in the fall.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I think my best method to promote my books is bookstacking. I can see results quickly on Amazon.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write because you love to write and not to make money.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write more than one book!

What are you reading now?
I just completed John Grisham’s The Exchange. I have a shelf of books to read.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Once my novel is published, I will prioritize marketing before writing another.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a freelance copywriter for tech startups and ghostwriter for Forbes. I have published my first book under my own name. I enjoy traveling and get my best ideas when surrounded by water!

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Wings to Rise above Divorce. While going through my divorce, as a writer, I put pen to paper to help with that season. I was writing a fictionalized version that would have made a great Lifetime movie. As a Christian, I felt prompted to create my first book as non-fiction to help others who are going through a separation or divorce.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I take mini dance breaks.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m a big fan of Faulkner’s stream of consciousness. In modern writing, I enjoy Christian authors Lysa TerKeurst and Mary Marantz. For fiction, I enjoy Emily Giffin, Jennifer Weiner, and Elin Hilderbrand.

What are you working on now?
My book just launched, so my writing focus is on business and entrepreneurship, which is different from my book. My next book will probably be fiction.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing and don’t wait to be perfect! You can always edit, in your writing and in life.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
the long game is less crowded

What are you reading now?
ARC of The paradise problem by Christina Lauren

What’s next for you as a writer?
Focusing on more content to help others whether in relationships or business.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Bible because it’s long and every time a new revelation comes to me.

Interview With Author Paul J Jackson

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, everyone. I am from the UK and have self-published five books on Amazon that are available in Paperback and Kindle Unlimited.
My book ‘Retribution’ The Birth of a Horrifying Urban Legend has recently received a 5-star review and a gold book award from Literary Titan.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My Latest book is ‘A Pound of Flash’ a collection of horror flash fiction.
I guess it was inspired by the anthology ‘Fictional Reality’ by Pulp Fictional. I edited, created the cover for, and have two stories in it, along with Shaun Hutson, the godfather of gore.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to have several stories going on at the same time.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I like Dean Koontz and Peter James but I can’t say any book or author has influenced my writing. I like to think I have my own style and ideas.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on ‘Down a Dark Path’ Sinister Tales of Supernatural Horror – Volume 2, among other things.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That is a hard one. I’ve tried many different sites and methods with limited success. I’d like to know myself how and where to advertise for the best results. It seems to me that the only ones profiting from my hard work are those who promise rave reviews but deliver nothing.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never delete anything – stories or ideas. You’ll be surprised how many times I’ve gone back to them and, with a little tweaking, turned them into something worthy.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write because you enjoy it, not because you want to get rich.

What are you reading now?
I have recently finished ‘House of the Scorpion’ by Nancy Farmer. It is a YA novel but was given to me by my niece. It was good.
I also liked ‘Blood Red Road’ by Moira Young.
My go-to will always be Dean Koontz.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on several projects and hope to get ‘Down a Dark Path’ volume 2 out this year.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
I’d probably bring several survival books with advice about edible plants, flowers, fish, and insects.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Broken BUT NOT Forsaken: God’s Masterpiece
My inspiration to write the book “Broken BUT NOT Forsaken: God’s Masterpiece” likely stems from a deeply personal journey of overcoming adversity and finding strength in my faith. As a certified life coach, nurse, and someone who is passionate about helping others heal, I have encountered numerous individuals who have felt broken and lost, just as zi once was. Through my own experiences and the guidance of my faith, I’ve discovered that despite life’s challenges, nobody is ever truly forsaken, and everyone has the potential to be transformed into a masterpiece in the eyes of God. My book is a testament to this message of hope and resilience, offering practical advice, personal anecdotes, and spiritual insights to readers who may be struggling with their own trials. By sharing my journey and the encountered along the way, I aim to inspire and encourage individuals to embrace their brokenness as part of their journey towards becoming the masterpiece they were created to be. My ultimate goal is to spread a message of faith, restoration, and empowerment, guiding others towards a deeper understanding of God’s love and purpose for their lives.

My advice to new author is to Start writing: The first step to becoming an author is to start writing. Set aside time each day to write, even if it’s just for a few minutes. The more you write, the more you’ll improve.Find your voice: Experiment with different writing styles and genres to discover what feels most authentic to you. Your unique voice is what will make your writing stand out.Read widely: Read books in a variety of genres to expand your knowledge and understanding of storytelling techniques. Pay attention to how authors structure their plots, develop characters, and create engaging dialogue.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
piece of advice that may resonate deeply with you is the importance of empathy and active listening. In your profession, understanding and truly listening to others can make a significant difference in their healing journey. This advice reminds you to approach each individual with compassion, empathy, and a willingness to understand their unique experiences and perspectives.

Interview With Author Gerald Hogg

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am originally from Bedford in England but I grew up in Middlesbrough in North East England. When I was four years old, in the mid-1950s, my parents took me to Jamaica to live which must have planted in me the seed to travel, as I have travelled the world working as a chef in 5-star hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, Antarctic supply ships, custom patrol vessels, rig tenders, and oil tankers. I have also lived in Jamaica, Bermuda, Singapore, The Falkland Islands, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and the USA. I have been visiting Thailand regularly as a tourist since 1983 and I have lived here for seven years since retiring and moving from Australia in 2017. Since arriving in Thailand to keep myself busy in retirement I re-invented myself from a chef to an author and started to write travel books which in turn led to me writing my biography and I then took the next step of writing fiction books. I have written fifteen books in total, nine of which are travel books aimed at retirees and baby boomers who may want to retire to another country, where their pensions will stretch much further. I have also written my biography; You Will Never Amount to Anything. Being a glutton for punishment two years ago I started my own YouTube channel about my life living in Thailand, “Thailand My Land…Retiring Disgracefully”

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book will be published at the end of April and is called The Eight Best Retirement Locations in Thailand and is the ninth book in the Retirees travel book series.
Synopsis
Thailand is one of the most popular countries to live in for retirees and expats from all around the world, and there are plenty of reasons why that is so. For pennies in the pound, you get low-cost living where your income or pension will stretch much further, a tropical climate, beautiful palm-fringed islands, friendly smiling people, inexpensive housing and affordable high-quality medical care. A country where Buddhist monks, golden beaches, palm trees, monkeys and elephants become part of your everyday life. The problem with Thailand is you’re spoilt for choice. So where do you start to look for the best place to live or to spend your golden years? The book is a comprehensive look at eight towns that I consider to be the best areas for expats to live in Thailand. Of course, where you may want to live in this fascinating and diverse country will depend on your outlook on life, hobbies and the lifestyle that you want to achieve in your new country and many more towns might tick the boxes for where you may want to live These are just my personal favourites, places that I have either lived in or spent a considerable amount of time in.
My eight favourite places for retirees in Thailand in no particular order are:
• Chiang Mai
• Koh Samui
• Bangkok
• Phuket
• Hua Hin
• Krabi
• Chiang Rai
• Pattaya

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Being of a certain age I didn’t grow up with computers but I have certainly adapted to them since I started writing books. I do most of my writing thanks to the wonders of Wi-Fi sitting on a beach or around a swimming pool in Thailand or some other Southeast Asian country. Quite often when the sun is going down my inspiration is helped along with a cocktail or two.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The first books I remember reading were the Just William series of books by Richmal Crompton. As I matured, I read everything Charles Dickens wrote and all of The Hobbit series of books by J. R. R. Tolkien, I also loved Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. My daughter was born in 1974, and as she grew older I would read Watership Down by Richard Adams to her at bedtime. Looking back now it was probably a little scary for a little girl, but she loved the book as much as I did. Being at sea for much of my life, books were an important source of entertainment in the few leisure hours that you get working on a ship. I would read everything that I could get my hands on, from Agatha Christie to Ernest Hemingway, from Nevil Shute to Leslie Thomas. My favourite authors of today are James Lee Burke, Elmore Leonard, Dennis Lehane, Kate Atkinson, and Khaled Hosseini. I also like to read travel-related books especially anything by Michael Palin and Bill Bryson. I don’t think any author actually influenced me, I just loved losing myself in a good book.

What are you working on now?
I plan to have some well deserved R&R and do some travelling around Asia to get some inspiration for my next book

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have recently published a website as it seems a necessity in this day and age. Apart from that, being a retiree and of that certain age, I am not very knowledgeable about computers and social media, so I rely on word of mouth and hopefully, my publisher getting my name out there. I know I must be missing out on many selling opportunities but I find the whole social media thing rather boring and time-consuming. Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep doing what you’re doing; even if you don’t get published, you’re still improving your mind, enjoying what you’re doing and fulfilling an ambition. My brother John, who was a much better writer than I will ever be, tried most of his life to get his books published and never succeeded. I wrote my second book in 2017 (the first book I wrote was never meant for publication) and I was offered a publishing contract for it within a few months of releasing it on Amazon. What I discovered since becoming an author is that getting a book published is quite often down to luck, being in the right place at the right time and of course writing a great book.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Travel to different countries whenever you can. The greatest experiences are seeing other cultures and getting a real perspective on life and the lives that other people lead”. Which is the way I have always tried to live my life.
When I was in Cambodia recently researching my book, I spoke with a lady who was just forty-two years old the same age as my daughter. Her father was arrested, imprisoned and later killed by Pol Pot’s henchmen for the crime of being a teacher. When she was one year old, with her mother, older brother, and sister, they were forced to march 330 kilometres from their home in Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville to work on a communal farm. Her mother died along the way of sickness and malnutrition and she was separated from her brother and sister, and she would never see them again. She was taken in and raised in impoverished conditions by another family who had befriended her mother on the long march south. Being born in Cambodia during those murderous days she had not had the opportunities in her life that my children or grandchildren have had. She had no education, no real family, and had been working as a prostitute since she was fourteen years old to survive. It certainly put everything in perspective for me. You don’t see the real world by watching it on TikTok or YouTube.

What are you reading now?
I have started to read Neville Shute’s books. I read them all when I was younger and they had a big influence on me. I love reading great books but unfortunately living here in Thailand with the many things to see and do here with being an author and also having to make content for my YouTube channel there are not always enough hours in the day for me to sit down and read a good book. I thought that when I retired, I would have lots of time to read but it didn’t work out that way.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a few ideas that I am formulating for my next book in Thai detective The Chai Son Sinuan series of books.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
The Blah Story by Nigel Tomm. It’s reputed to be the longest book ever written. I am not sure if I would enjoy it but it has 7312 pages so it would last a while whilst waiting to be rescued. It’s probably cheating but I would take the boxed set of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. How to Survive on a Deserted Island by Tim O’Sheid would be invaluable and for a little light entertainment Adolf Hitler; My Part in His Downfall by Spike Milligan.

Lawyer by day, writer by night. Like many others, I struggle with work-life balance. And when I do, I might just bring out an idea or two. I’m a first-time, self-published writer. I’ve just published my very first book in mid-March, 2024.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Girls V Boys, an action / adventure / sci-fi / romance tale filled with games, puzzles, and three different endings. There were tons of inspirations for it. Mainly from Japanese anime and manga.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to procrastinate. Which is something I really need off my back.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written more than two dozen short stories along with several non-fiction books, including two biographies, a textbook for drone pilots and one for WordPress websites, along with a few books with political topics.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Moon Base Horizon – Inspired by a lot of YouTube videos about the moon. It will be my first attempt at writing a novel.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I often wake up at 3 am with an idea and jot it down on a notepad next to the bed using a special pen with a red light. If I can still read my handwriting the next morning, I get started while my breakfast cereal is getting soggy.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Veronica H. Hart and Willam G. Collins, who are both members of my local writer’s group in Daytona, Florida.

What are you working on now?
A second collection of ten science fiction short stories.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
That’s still under consideration.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t believe everything you see on YouTube

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Don’t sleep in the subway, darling. Don’t stand in the pouring rain…”

What are you reading now?
Several ebooks related to research for my stories.

Interview With Author R.T. Leader

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, I’m RT Leader. I’m from Manchester, England and have recently published my first novel Hunter’s Vix. My career has been in the television industry, mixing with creatives and being inspired by stories. I’ve always harboured a passion for storytelling, writing my first tales at school to entertain my friends. I now live with my wife, and my pug, on the moors near the Peak District National Park, where the landscape provides inspiration daily.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My debut novel is named Hunter’s Vix. I’ve always loved science fiction, and whilst on honeymoon in Saint Lucia, I read a non-fiction book about the mysteries of life and the universe that remain to be solved. This, along with that paradise island, inspired the story that became Hunter’s Vix. It took me a decade to write, and I feel it is all the better as a result.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I hate to write a plan my projects as this takes me away from the actual storytelling, preferring instead to make sure the characters and plot are clear in my mind before setting off on my journey with them. I always have a beginning and an end before I write, with several key scenes planned, but I write as the inspiration takes me.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Arthur C. Clarke is my main source of inspiration – especially his “Rama” and “Odyssey” novels. I’ve also read Herbert, Gibson, and PKD in the science fiction genre. I also love Jules Verne and HG Wells.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently editing my second novel, the first in a series, entitled “Inversa 1: The Journeyman’s Devil.” It should be published within weeks. I’m about to start the second in this series too.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
A combination of word of mouth, and Amazon Ads.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write as a hobby. Enjoy your writing and see this as your primary purpose for telling a story. If you find success, all the better, but make sure what you write makes you happy first before considering the wider market – otherwise the focus will become work rather than pleasure.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Beware of the word “there”, the killer of prose.

What are you reading now?
The Ferryman by Justin Cronin

What’s next for you as a writer?
To build up my catalogue of work, and have a blast while doing so.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in the UK about 30 miles west of London, I am 47 years old, married with two children. I also have a black belt in Ju Jitsu.

I have written six Fantasy books. The Fall of Cadoria, The Demon and The Raven, and The Dance of The Blacksmith and The Huntress trilogy which also comes in an anthology edition. I also have some short stories on my website https://paulwillsonfantasy.com, Wattpad and Medium.

I also have a sideline in erotic romance under the pen name Sean Dalton. I have four published books under that name. You can also read my stories on Medium and unpolished versions on Literotica and Wattpad

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I am currently promoting The Fall of Cadoria. It is based on the premise, like The Demon and The Raven, what happens if t he bad guys win and asks if they are really bad..

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I struggle to focus on one project at a time. I always have four or five projects on the go.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
David Edding and The Belgariad is what made me fall on love with Fantasy.
JRR Tolkien, taught me to write short stories when preparing a book. Short stories are a great way to give characters a back story and work out how the story got to the way it is.
Joe Abercrombie, the reading the dialogue between his characters in an education in itself.

What are you working on now?
I am currently proofreading the sequel to The Fall of Cadoria, The Empress of Thargoza. I hope to publish it in the summer.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Everywhere and anywhere when you are starting out. It must be so much easier if you are an established author.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Learn how to market a book before publishing and invest in a quality book cover.

What are you reading now?
I am currently reading the First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie

What’s next for you as a writer?
As I mentioned, I am currently proofreading the sequel to The Fall of Cadoria which will be called The Empress of Thargoza then writing the next book in my Gods and Runes series, The Isle of the Seeress.

I am going to cheat and I would take the box set of The Belgariad and The First Law Trilogy

I’m a native of NYC, and I grew up in the neighborhood of Chelsea and attended school in Greenwich Village. As a true New Yorker, I have experienced a lot growing up & those raw & often intense moments have made me the strong woman I am today. I have written three books, one on poetry and the other two are memoirs.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“The Virtuous Vagina – How To Leave Lust In The Dust & Find Clarity Through Chastity”. It’s a sequel to my first memoir & it was inspired by my desire to help women navigate dating with more introspection and self worth.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I would say that my most unusual writing habit is that I write on my cell phone while lying in bed first thing in the morning. I don’t transfer anyThe of my work on to my computer until I’m almost done. At that point I copy & paste what I’ve written and start the editing process from my computer.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I absolutely love TikTok! At first I found it hard to get a handle on the platform. I posted a couple of things and didn’t get much traction. But, overtime by being consistent I have developed more of a following. I’m still a small fish in a big pond, but I have made connections & sold a couple of books. I really appreciate that TikTok saves hashtags it makes it soooo much easier when posting.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
I would recommend taking any free classes that you can find. If you have the funds to invest in marketing & promotion, then pay for what you can afford. However, if money is tight then sign up for any free courses about book sales & promos. Every author feels such a sense of elation when their book is finished, but that’s just the beginning! Books need to seen to be read & reviews are key to getting readers. Be prepared to give books for free & use social media consistently to remind people of who you are, what your message is & know your audience.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write about what you know.

What are you reading now?
“Theology Of The Body” by Christopher West and “What’s Love Got To Do With Your Intimate Relationship” by Kenneth Walters.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Promoting my books for film adaptions.

I’m Paul Anthoney Blake, Minister, Abundant Life Coach, Motivational Speaker and Author of 5 books, 4 of which have been nominated for various awards. I am a proud father, faithful husband and, above all, a Christian desiring to please God in all areas of my life. Coming from a dysfunctional family, I have a passion for empowering people through the power of words. I believe if I can help change the way people think, I can direct them to find their purpose to enjoy abundant living. I am driven to make the most out of every day and I want to share my story with the world.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest is not yet published. I just completed the cover design and will formatting and layout next. It is a book that captures one of passions which is counselling. It is titled “Shepherding the Flock: Transforming God’s People into a Community of Care and Encouragement. I wrote this book because I believe we need a more practical approach to caring for people in the church and community by extension.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
usually write when I am in the mood to do so. When I get in my zone, I will write for hours and days at a time. I love to do freestyle writing where just put down my thoughts as they come in no particular order then I go back and fine tune until I am satisfied.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
C.S. Lewis has influenced me I love his imagination. The Chronicles of Narnia series was one of my favourites as a child. I also love Caribbean writers such as V. S. Naipaul, V.S. Reid and C. Everald Palmer.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I am focused on publishing my book on pastoral care and counselling. I am also working on a book for marriage and relationships and a book of poetry.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My website is quite efficient in promoting my books. I also do a lot of networking at different events in Jamaica and the Caribbean to promote my work.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
One of the things writers struggle with is self-doubt. I know I did, but you have to believe in your abilities. i have learned over they years that my books are not for everybody, but there are readers out there who are waiting to hear from me. We have to push through the self-doubt and realize that the mission is greater than us.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The greatest advice I have heard comes from my book coach Crystal Daye. She keeps telling me that I have a message that someone needs to hear, so I must not think of giving up. She has also taught me the importance of planning for every stage of the writing process from Manuscript to publishing. Writing and publishing for me is not just a hobby it is a business.

What are you reading now?
I have been focusing on reading a lot of books on marriage and relationships. The last book I read was Love and Respect by Emerson Eggerich.

What’s next for you as a writer?
To publish and market Shepherding the Flock. I planning for book tours and media interviews. I also want to develop courses to teach from this new book.

Interview With Author Sarah P. Blanchard

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
DRAWN FROM LIFE is my first full-length novel. I’ve written many short stories, poems, and nonfiction pieces for magazines and literary journals. My story collection, PLAYING CHESS WITH BULLS, was published in 2023. The title story was a finalist for the Doris Betts Fiction Prize in 2021. Years, ago, I also published three nonficiton books on horse training.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
DRAWN FROM LIFE was initially inspired by Alice Gregory’s article in THE NEW YORKER, “The Shame and Sorrow of the Accidental Killer.” I wanted to write a story about a young woman’s struggle to resolve her feelings of guilt after suffering a devastating tragedy. This idea eventually grew to become a novel in which the close-cousins relationship between a bully and her target also provides a path for the main character to find redemption.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nothing especially strange. I write at my desk each day, with a small dog keeping me company. When the well runs dry, I walk or garden or ride my horse. Or take a nap.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Barbara Kingsolver is at the top of my list. Next would be a couple of British mystery writers, Ann Cleeves and Elizabeth George. I love the scope and range, the marvelous settings and characterizations of Stephen King. Go a bit further back and you’ll find my shelves filled with books by Dick Francis. Look WAY back and you’ll find Hemingway, Steinbeck, and Beryl Markham. For poetry, look at Billy Collins, Mary Oliver and Robert Frost, to name just a few.

What are you working on now?
As soon as the audiobook for DRAWN FROM LIFE is completed (Summer 2024), I’ll be sketching out the next novel. Which might include characters from DRAWN FROM LIFE, and might be set in Canada.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Still working on this as I’m a newbie at promotions. Mostly, I just want to write.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read lots of well-written books across different genres. Study those writers and figure out what makes their writing good. Learn the craft as early and as well as possible. Don’t fear criticism, lean into it and learn from it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Writers are always cautioned to be ready to “murder your babies,” meaning you have to be ruthless about paring away the unnecessary (but often quite pretty) words and phrases we’ve followed down the rabbit holes — those times when we’ve wandered away from the storyline, muddled the plot, or slowed down the action by musing on something completely extraneous. An excellent editor told me, “Don’t kill the babies, just rehome them.” In other words, pull them out of the story they don’t belong in, and give them their own story. I now have many chapters of rehomed backstories, witty dialogue and interesting anecdotes that will find their own new homes.

What are you reading now?
A lovely book of historical fiction by Angel Khoury, BETWEEN TIDES. Set during World War II, it’s based on the true story of a man who lived duplicate lives with two wives on similar shores—one on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the other in Manteo, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The daughter of his southern wife, knowing nothing of her deceased father’s first marriage, travels north to seek answers about her family. It’s a marvelously lyrical piece of writing about grief, loss, resilience, and how an unexpected love can span generations and distances.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Traveling, talking with book groups, and more writing. Which is the whole point, right?

Demon Copperhead, The Poisonwood Bible, Grapes of Wrath, and Careless in Red by Elizabeth George.

Interview With Author Jackie O’Donnell

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I admit it. I’m addicted to writing, be it poetry or prose. It’s a compulsion I’ve had ever since I first held a pencil and could make words appear on pieces of butcher paper from the roll my parents wrapped bread and other goodies in at our family bakery in San Jose, CA. It continued through third grade, when I won a prize from the school bank for a little masterpiece called “It’s Fun to Save.” Writing drove away the lonesomes of not being able to play with other kids because polio left me less than agile, and it led to several notebooks containing imaginary escapades of my mom, my dog Slicer, my wheelchair, and me. As a senior in high school I won the Creative Writing award and a scholarship, but I earned only a B in the class because I wanted to write what I wanted to write, not what was assigned.
When I began college, I decided writing was not going to feed me, and I loved the idea of teaching others how to communicate. Teaching was a natural fit. For many years I taught high school English, that universally hated subject. Those years gave me happy fulfillment and lifelong friends in the form of colleagues and ex-students. I count among my blessings “kids” who were now in education, politics, on both sides of the aw (in prison and a District Attorney), corporate executives, trades people, the famous and slightly infamous. Keeping in touch with these people, along with experiences I had growing up as a person with a disability, gave me food for thought…and for writing. Much of what I write, then, deals with how people treat each other.
In 2005, my son, Brian, vacated the nest to begin his own life. Deeply saddened by this, his father and I set out the following day to turn his bedroom into a guest room and buy new living room furniture. When Brian asked why we hadn’t done all that while he was still home, I could only tell him he’d understand when he had teenagers, and that we hoped he’d drop by often to see whatever else we were up to. Meanwhile, my husband, Frank, and I were content to make a life of our own while enjoying the man our son had grown up to be.
I’ve written six books so far, the latest one (“The Women in Me: How they Helped Me Survive and Thrive”) with my good friend Nancy Malone-Mercado.
Life is good. Life brings surprises, Life exists to be written about and shared.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“The Women in Me: How they Helped Me Survive and Thrive” was born from a desire to empower women to recognize the Influencers within themselves and draw on their legacy. By doing so, they can face obstacles that could otherwise prevent them from having full lives. This memoir was designed to be readable, real, humorous, entertaining, and inspiring.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
1) I usually write a chapter or section in my mind before writing it down.
2) I’m devoted to the Oxford/Serial comma.
3) I avoid triteness and enjoy twisting old clichés into new images and keeping language fresh.
4) I insist that chapters be short so each can be absorbed in a single sitting, say, in the dentist’s waiting room.
5) I insist on injecting humor that helps keep readers engaged.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Robert Frost and Ernest Hemmingway for their simple yet powerful style.
Mark Twain for his language and humor.
Stephen King for learning that a book’s excessive length doesn’t make it good.

What are you working on now?
Publicizing and selling my latest book and writing poetry. (Need a break from writing long works.) Also, I’m changing prices on all of my eBooks except The Women in Me. They’ve been out long enough that all I care about now is sharing them with readers, so they’re all free.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Bookstore events.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Decide on a purpose, audience, and structure before writing a single word. Then let the words flow, knowing you’ll go back many times to fix grammar and punctuation, repetition, missing parts, etc. before you give it to an editor. Don’t look at it while the editor has it–a break from it gives you fresh perspective when you go through it again when you get it back. Read it aloud. If you stumble or something doesn’t make sense…fix it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Best advice on writing: Keep your eye on the book you’re writing and worry later about how to publish or promote it.

Best advice on parenting: When I lamented the condition of my teenage son’s room, my grandmother told me to close his door and ignore it. It’s his space. He’ll get tired of its condition and clean it up–or he’ll run out of clean clothes.

What are you reading now?
Mainly mysteries. They’re fast-reads, let my mind play guessing-games, and are relaxing.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I think I’ll stick to my poetry for a while. Which means that I have to immerse myself in experiencing the world around me more than I did while writing the memoir.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
1) A book of poetry, probably an anthology.
2) A book, with pictures, identifying birds, their features, habitats, mannerisms, etc.
3) A Bible, because it has so many good stories, ideas, and inspirations.
4) A solar-powered notebook computer so I could continue to write. (Okay. I know this is cheating, but it IS a “notebook”!

Ignorant Bliss is the name of my book. I love the world of fantasy and paranormal romance and those are the books I tend to read. I can’t say that there was any one thing that inspired this book. But my over active imagination is what fueled it.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wish I could say that I had unusual writing habits. How interesting would that be? Although I will admit that I have sticky notes, scrap pieces of paper and several composition notebooks that my kids never used in school scattered around my house that are filled with ideas that come to me at any moment of the day or night.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Mary Janice Davidson’s Queen Betsy series, Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake series

What are you working on now?
The second book in my series

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Friends and family, Facebook and the promo sites, such as this one

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up. If you can, work with a group such as selfpublishing.com. They are an excellent team and they pushed me to finally make my dream of becoming a published author a reality.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Funny thing it was in a movie (the newest Dungeons and Dragons) – as long as you keep failing you will never fail. It’s when you stop trying that failure finally wins.

What are you reading now?
To be honest, I’m not reading anything. I’ve been too busy trying to write as much as I can.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m finalizing a novella with the same characters as Ignorant Bliss. I’ll be giving that away as a free promo to my readers. And then I’m not to book 2 of my trilogy.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Green Darkness – Anya Seton. Anything by Mary Janice Davidson because her books are hilarious and if I’m stranded on an island I might need a reason to laugh. And a survival book. That would come in handy. I may start carrying one around with me just in case.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Deana-Kay Thomas. I am a Social Woker by profession. I am adventurous, jovial and a determined person. I enjoy singing worship songs to God and a good home cooked meal. I have written 1 book so far and is working on a second book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is Behind the Perfect Picture. I was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write about my life’s journey.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I love to write late at nights when the environment is super quiet and I find pleasure in visiting nature sites to write as well.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Carolyn Keene author of Nancy Drew stories.

What are you working on now?
I am currently working on myself professionally.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use my various social media platforms to promote my book. Facebook, Tiktok , Instagram and WhatsApp. I do so by creating videos and posting photos.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
New authors, be persistent and intentional when writing. Do not stop , continue, write daily even if it’s one paragraph. Never Stop Writing.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Embrace Failure: Learn from your mistakes and see them as an opportunity to grow.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Continue writing more books that will inspire other to maximize their full potential and walk into their God-Given purpose.
