Interview With Author Chris Riley
Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live near Sacramento, CA, but my heart lies in the Pacific Northwest. I teach special education, and have been writing for over ten years. My first novel, THE SINKING OF THE ANGIE PIPER, was published in 2017. And my second novel, THE BROKEN PINES, was recently pubished. My third novel, titled WENT MISSING, is forthcoming in February of 2024. I have had over 100 short stories published in various magazines and anthologies, and my debut collection of dark fiction, titled OF WOODLAND TEXTURES AND CHARNEL DELIGHTS (written under Christian Riley) was also recently published.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
THE BROKEN PINES is my latest novel. The inspiration for the story was a conglomeration of living in Humboldt County for many years, watching Sons of Anarchy, and working with a student who had traumatic mutism.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
As the years go by, it has occured to me that what used to be my writing “habits” have slowly but steadily disappeared. Now, I just write whenever I find the time, and if the coffee is hot and the music is good.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many to choose from. John Steinbeck is my favorite author, but I read just about everything, so I have many diverse influences. For historical fiction, I like to read William Napier. Cormac McCarthy’s THE ROAD, and Hemingway’s THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA are my favorite books. Others writers include Dan Simmons, Louis L’Amour, George Martin, James Rollins, Jack London, Stephen Hunter, and Robert Heinlein.
What are you working on now?
Currently, I am flip-flopping between writing content for my second short story collection, and prepping for the third novel in my Sam Nolan thriller series (WENT MISSING being the first book, and the second book currently in the hopper).
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Currently, I’ve had some success with various blogs as well as Goodreads giveaways, Facebook, NetGalley, and Bookbub.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I recommend writing short stories. Short stories are a great way to get your literary wheels greased, and you’ll learn a lot about writing in the process. And don’t forget to read a lot. Read anything and everything–don’t limit your personal library to just a few genres. Also, consider finding/joining a writing group in your area. Good feedback is always valuable.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep busy and stay positive.
What are you reading now?
I am currently reading Ginearosa Carbone’s debut novel, CUT ME OPEN, MAKE ME WHOLE. So far it’s brilliant.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Short term, I’ve got two more novels coming down the pipeline, and that’s not counting the Science Fiction novel that is currently being shopped around. I foresee a few more novels yet to be written, but the ultimate plan is to get started on an epic fantasy series.
If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Game of Thrones, The Road, The Old Man and the Sea, The Grapes of Wrath, and Of Mice and Men. Still my all time favorites.
