Interview With Author Rafael Marín Gómez

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on June 17, 1977. I hold a degree in audiovisual communication from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello in Caracas, and two master’s degrees in communication management in Venezuela and Barcelona, Spain. I’ve spent the last 18 years developing my professional career as a marketing and communications leader in multinational companies. I am a polyglot and I speak fluent Spanish, English, Catalan and French (the latter in the learning phase). I’m a descendant of Spanish immigrants, and in 2010 I decided to go to meet my roots and moved to Barcelona, and in 2020 I moved to Madrid, where I have lived ever since with my wife and three cats. In 2023 I won the audience award of the international poetry festival La Estación del Arte for my poem “Horizonte”, in an event held in Milan, Italy, and I published my poetry book Sondetí the same year. I am a poet by vocation, as well as a short story writer, musician composer, animalist, tireless traveler, dream maker, photographer and actor.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first -and so far latest- book is a poetry book entitled Sondetí. Every love story has three parts: the magic of the encounter, the pain of losing it, and the hope of regaining it. Sondetí is the story of universal love that testifies that one can only become truly free through love. It was inspired in a true love story I lived when I was a teenager.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to listen music when I write. For me, the two form of arts are connected.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
In the realm of poetry, I’d say that definitely Mario Benedetti has been my master and inspiration, but also fantasy writers like J.R.R. Tolkien and Michael Ende

What are you working on now?
I’d like to publish more poetry books in the future.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
For the time being I’m focusing on Instagram as a main platform for promotion.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
To listen to themselves and to have the courage to tell what they hear.

What are you reading now?
I’m reading the complete works of Gibrán Jalil Gibrán, Federico García Lorca and Antonio Machado.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Growing as a writer and a poet, and hopefully publish many more poetry books.

Interview With Author Nazia Kamali

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have been fond of writing ever since I was a kid. Although I studied engineering at school, it was pretty evident to me where my interests lie.
I began writing at a young age, and was Associate Editor of my college magazine. My first article was published in 2021 and I haven’t looked back ever since.

I have published my first book this year with several others in the docket.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Beyond the Interregnum, my debut novel came into being when I was thinking about how fantasy does not always need to be about magic.
This book deals with alternate universe inhabited by Djinns, who are quite scientifically advanced.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I am not sure about that.
I believe every write has a unique habit but if its unusual or not is debatable.

As for me, I do not write a detailed outline of my work. If I know too much about it, I loose interest.
I have a character sketch and a direction in mind, but I like to explore the story. Let the characters forge their own path.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have been influenced a lot by Amitav Ghosh – I wish I could write beautifully like him.
I have also been an ardent admirer of Paulo Coelho – I read him a lot during my college days.

What are you working on now?
I am working on the sequel of Beyond the Interregnum.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am still new to the game, but I believe a collective effort is the best one – Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Goodreads, all such websites are good.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read as much as you can – the good, the bad, the excellent books, the ones no one like, the ones that win awards, and the ones that you are told to not read. Only then will you understand the difference between what you like to read, what you would like to write, and how do you want to present the story.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write everyday, even if you are editing a previous work. Sit on the computer and type, make words come out of you.

I want to write a long epic, which is a dream right now

Hello, my name is Michelle Rice-Gauvreau. I am an adoptee and first time author. I’ve written one book so far about my life and the circumstances surrounding my adoption.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Who Am I? It was inspired by my own adoption and the circumstances that led me to where I am today.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nothing too unusual. I always write at night and sometimes stay up all night with those pesky midnight edits and formatting.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Denise Linn – Kindling the Native Spirit.

What are you working on now?
I am working on a second book about Spiritual Animals that have messages or healing effects.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Hiring a publicist who can lead you down the right path. If you cannot afford one, use social media and promote your book that way. Have family and friends promote the book too. Also, approach book stores and ask if they will host your new book with a book signing event.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t quit. Keep going. There will be times you will feel you cannot do or ask yourself why, believe me, you will be glad when you are published. It’s a great accomplished feeling.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep going. You’ve got a story to share!

What’s next for you as a writer?
I would like to do a number of book signings and interviews as time permits. In the meantime, I’ve started my second book.

Second Lieutenant Matthew Weiss an Intelligence Officer in the United States Marine Corps. Previously, he worked in mergers and acquisitions at a cutting-edge defense technology company. He holds a BS and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Most importantly, he is a member of Generation Z who cares deeply about solving this issue of service. This is his first book.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“We Don’t Want You, Uncle Sam: Examining the Military Recruiting Crisis with Generation Z” = name of book.

We Don’t Want You, Uncle Sam. This is what Generation Z is saying with respect to military service.

The all-volunteer force that has served our country well for more than 50 years is at a critical inflection point. Today, recruiters are struggling to bring enough Zoomers into the armed services. Mismatched fundamental ideals, divergent beliefs about the workplace, and other sociocultural influences have contributed to the United States military scrambling to get a grasp on how to appeal to Gen Z.

Through the use of personal life stories and macro analysis, this book explains why military recruiting in the United States is at an all-time low in order to suggest ways that American society and its leaders can fix this issue. We must rebuild the value proposition of military service by demonstrating the benefits of the world’s greatest physical social network.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I often lock myself in the the room for 50 hours on end to have intense focus and get the writing done.

What are you working on now?
A manufacturing investment thesis

National news interviews have been the best because the topic I wrote on is of national interest.

Yes, just finish the writing. Go super hard and write like crazy.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Michael Balter. I’ve been a storyteller my entire life, but I only recently embraced writing as a second career. I was born in Berlin, where I lived in a bombed out building until the Wall went up, when my family fled to Canada. In a piece of smart timing, we moved to Detroit right in the midst of the 1967 riots. During the Vietnam War, I was an air traffic controller at the busiest air base in the world, at Udorn in Thailand.

After the war, I got an undergraduate degree in aeronautical engineering and an MBA. In the early days of Silicon Valley, I parlayed my talent for storytelling into a job at Intel Corporation. I spent 17 years in sales and marketing there, until I was bitten by the entrepreneurial bug and left to join a voice recognition startup. It came very close to going public, but didn’t quite make it. After that I led a whole series of other startups – some of which were successful and others that failed spectacularly.

I retired in 2019 and started working full time on my writing. I’ve completed and published one book, Chasing Money, a thriller about two business partners in a struggling startup who take money from the wrong person. When their partner is killed they have days to find $10 million and a mysterious missing painting or share his fate.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Chasing Money was inspired by my early years as an entrepreneur, when my business partner and I were constantly seeking venture capital to keep our startup alive. One night, after a long session with potential investors in New York, we were returning to our hotel via a sketchy neighborhood and I joked that, if we were mugged, I’d probably pitch the robbers on investing. That spurred a fun conversation and gave me the nucleus of the idea for the book.

Later, I was involved with a couple startups that were connected to the art world, and got some fascinating insights that informed both the characters and the plot of the book. And, one of my business partners was actually kidnapped by a Russian mobster. I had to write about that!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I can’t write in the peace and quiet of my home. I need stimulation, so you’ll typically find me writing in one of my favorite coffee shops. In Portland, where I lived until recently, that was the JoLa Cafe on Corbett. And now you’ll find me at the Harwood Gold cafe in the beautiful resort town of Charlevoix, Michigan.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Elmore Leonard’s books, and the way he drives the story through dialogue. His character’s voices are so authentic. That’s definitely something I’ve tried to emulate. When I lived in Detroit, I used to drive by his house. I was and am very impressed by his work.

I think Catch-22 was the first dark comedy that I ever read. I was really attracted to that. Kurt Vonnegut also made a big impression on me as a young man with his snarky dialogue and dark humor. I read all his books.

And then Prizzi’s Honor and The Godfather were also books I loved and that deeply influenced me. The characters and their motivations were so well-developed in The Godfather. And the dialogue – “My father made him an offer he can’t refuse.” A simple short line that is iconic. There’s a lot you can learn from Mario Puzo.

What are you working on now?
I’m working on the next book in my Marty and Bo thriller series, the sequel to Chasing Money. My two protagonists have finally got the investor money they’ve been so desperately seeking, but the consequences of some of the decisions they’ve made are starting to catch up with them in unexpected ways. It’s set in Italy, where Bo and Marty have gone to negotiate a deal with the Vatican, which is something I actually did with one of the startups I founded.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My secret weapon is my wife, Suzanne. She spent her whole career in marketing, and she handles all the marketing of the book for me. One of the most important things she did for me was to reach out to other thriller writers and convince them to read my book. I didn’t have a network of other authors that I was connected to so this was hard work. Lots of people said no, but every author who took the time to read the book praised it highly, and that’s how I got some of the awesome blurbs on the cover..

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t stop writing. Lots of people talk about writing but don’t write. It’s easy to get discouraged, but keep going. I got discouraged a lot when I first started writing – and I spent over a year writing and rewriting my first few chapters.

Finally I got disciplined and set a goal to get a draft of my whole book done in a year. I started writing every day, and stopped worrying about making the first version perfect. It took me a little over a year, but I got the book done. And then I spent another year rewriting and refining and polishing until I had something I was really proud of.

For me writing is more about rewriting. Get something written down, even if it’s rough, and then go back and polish it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I was hung up on getting my book published by a traditional publisher – but that’s almost impossible for a novice author who doesn’t have some kind of other literary credentials. I wasted a year trying to find an agent who could get me a book deal and kept getting rejected. Then I met two people, friends of friends, who were successful published authors – and they both told me that independent publishing was a much better route. It’s much faster, much easier, and you take home a bigger share of your book revenues.

I was concerned about doing it all myself, so I wound up working with Mission Point Press, a hybrid publisher who has their own imprint, and has held my hand through every step of the process. That’s been a great approach for me, and I encourage people to try it.

What are you reading now?
I’m in the middle of three different books. I’m reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks, who I recently saw at an event in Michigan. I love how her characters speak. She’s got a great mastery of voice.

And then I’m reading “Chip” which is about the semiconductor industry where I spent my early career.

And I just started Real Tigers, which is the third book in the Slough House series by Mick Herron. I’ve got the whole set and I’m enjoying working my way through them over time.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing has become my passion. I love what I am doing so much that I write every day, even Saturdays and Sundays. I get a feeling of satisfaction when I craft a good sentence. And I’ve learned from the mistakes that I made writing my first book, so I have less rewriting to do.

Right now I’m about a third of the way through the sequel to Chasing Money, with a goal of publishing it in 2024. As soon as I’m done, I’ll start on book three in the series. I’ve plotted out a character arc that will take 5-6 books to complete.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Number one on my list would be The Magus by John Fowles. That’s my all time favorite novel and something I could read over and over again.

And then I’d take a couple Dennis Lehane books. He wrote two of my favorite detective novels “A Drink Before the War” which was his debut novel, and “Gone Baby Gone” which made him famous and is just a beautiful book.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written dozens of novels from horror to suspense to scifi to fantasy to steampunk. Four of my suspense/supernatural novels were published by Random House. Four others by Astor and Blue. And I currently self publish (which is a learning experience in itself. I write stories I’d like to read, and I learn all about them as the characters reveal themselves to me. I told my agent once that I could outline, but for me it would be like building a skeleton, then covering it with skin and trying to make it walk and breathe…

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Sons of Empire is the first in the Empire series and follows the lives and adventures of a couple of young men on a world that mirrors our own, circa 1900. Only on the World of Arras there was a Magical Revolution rather than an Industrial one. The old magic is dying out and the new wizards of Techomagic are leading the way into what they imagine to be a bright future. But the bad comes with progress as well as the good.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
LOL. Not that I know of.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Koontz, King, Herbert, Gaiman…the list goes on.

What are you working on now?
Finishing the second book in the Empire Series. Empires Collide.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
This is new to me, but I’m a quick study.

Read. Write. Rinse and repeat.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Take advice with a grain of salt.

What are you reading now?
Three histories, an urban fantasy, and a Koontz thriller.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Well, there are three different series all begun in the World of Arras so next is relative.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
A.C. Dunne is a pen name for a husband and wife team. We have always wanted to write books together and always tried to figure out what would be best. The husband has a background in Maritime Archaeology and loves history. The wife did not like history growing up. Just like many people, she saw it as stale dates and dry facts. Together they decided to write history books that brought it to life and made it witty and enjoyable for everyone. So far, we have written 11 books, but only two are published at the moment.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Our latest book is called “Oppenheimer: Master of Atomic Mayhem.” As you may guess, the Christopher Nolan movie inspired us to write it. Oppenheimer is certainly a fascinating figure in history that many people don’t know about.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I think the two-author approach is probably our most unusual writing habit. In anything we write, we try to infuse wit, humor, and a touch of sarcasm. We both love unsuspecting and clever humor, and so we try to show that through our books.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Our writing style was probably most influenced by A Series of Unfortunate Events. We love the ridiculous situations and subtle humor in the books. Douglas Adams is another of our influences with the dry British humor.

What are you working on now?
We are currently working on revising our book called “Ancient Greece: Those Guys Knew a Thing or Two.”

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Amazon is probably our best method, but we also have our website, wittyhistory.com.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Our biggest advice would be don’t take shortcuts. Writing is fun and rewarding by itself. But if you take shortcuts and think you’ll make it big, you are wrong. Unless you’re incredibly lucky, in which case, kudos.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you want to be a great writer, you have to be a great reader. In other words, in order to be the best writer you can be, you have to read a ton.

What are you reading now?
I am currently reading a book about the early church and the church fathers. It is called “Reading the Church Fathers: A History of the Early Church and the Development of Doctrine.”

What’s next for you as a writer?
We are going to keep trucking with our series Witty History. We want to be able to provide as much interesting and fun history as we possibly can.

If you were going to be stranded on a desert island and allowed to take 3 or 4 books with you what books would you bring?
Physician’s Desk Reference…hollowed out, inside: waterproof matches, iodine tablets, beet seeds, protein bars, NASA blanket. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, I’ve lived most of my adult life in Europe (Switzerland, Germany) and South America (Argentina). During my career in the Airline industry, I moonlighted in education (Waldorf), translating and writing. What was once moonlighting is now full-time. Currently I live in the mountains of Argentina. What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Reincarnation Blues. It is a compilation of poens that I’ve written over the years, and is scheduled for publication in September, 2023. Upcoming titles are: Intergalactic Reincarnation, Passing Away in Boca Raton, Don Antonio’s Last Meeting, and Tales of Anthroposophy in Argentina.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
All of my habits are unusual! As the ideas mature, I can embue them with feeling and start putting them into words.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Rudolf Steiner: who wrote 28 books, gave over 6700 lectures, and penned several hundred articles, essays, verses, and meditations. You name the subject and Dr Steiner has spoken or written about it. He developed Waldorf Education (a world-wide pedagogy), Biodynamics (the mother of Organnic Agriculture), Eurythmy (Art as Visible Speech), Anthroposophic Medicine, and more. All of this was given to humanity over 100 years ago, and is still relevant today.

What are you working on now?
Polishing the coming publications, and readying the myriad works I have written over the years that have yet to be published

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Having the books available at as many Book Stores and book outlets as possible Availability is the key. Also, my Southern Cross Review.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep creating! Never retire!!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Love is all there is!

What are you reading now?
The new material that is being considered for publication in my Southern Cross Review.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Short stories! And putting them into compilations … or gettinng them published as individual books. We’ll see …

Waiting for Morning Time. It is a true story about three men who were lost at sea in the Gulf of Mexico. They were the longes known survivirs in open water.

Finish your first book with as little editing possible, just get it done. Once you are finished you can edit all you like.

this made me use my experience and learning through my work career and made me write books with a focus on the technical side and the correct way to make garment and apparel patterns and the correct way to sew.

my first book is about the human anatomy and the beauty of the human body proportions which play a vital role for the fit of any garment.
my second book is a detailed how-to book which describes with lucid illustrations the method of how to sew a shirt.

the third one being written now is on the lines of the second book which describes with lucid illustrations how to sew a trouser.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
the latest completed book is called ” how to sew a shirt” the inspiration came from the numerous videos going around on youtube which describe different operations of sewing a shirt but not completely. i thought a good job was needed to comprehensively describe with pictures and technique, from start to finish, of how to sew a shirt.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
i am picky about what i write and visit and revisit what i do write, edit and re-edit till i find that what i have written is simple and easy to understand for the person reading the book.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
no one in particular for the kind of books that i have written.

What are you working on now?
working on a book which describes in full completeness and lucidity, how to sew a trouser.

i am hoping awesome gang fits this bill, since this is my first time writing and promoting my book.

i am new myself so i am not really qualified to give advice, but i would definitely say sincerity counts in anything that anyone does. one has to be 100 percent sincere to any task one undertakes.

begin with the end in mind, work backwards.

i am learning software and have a book lined up for my course i intend to do.

My first book ” When the Mystic meets a Starfish” illustrated the stirring and enchanting poems. In this world where we all have lost the feeling of the magic of true love in life, my poems aim to be a perfect panacea for all the aching hearts who lost their hope in divinity. It will inspire people to traverse through the infinite darkness and feel the mystical light till eternity. She only wanted to convey and share “The Deepness” with readers. I encourage everyone to know about the deepness as a way of life for getting a pearl you have to dive in the deep ocean.

Usually, my ideas or words flow through my heart to my hands parallelly with the sombre and solemn tracks of music.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Born and raised in the north suburbs of Chicago, Illinois- and moved down to South Florida with my husband and dog two years ago- we had a baby boy, and found another dog here who was abandoned and roaming the streets. So now we are a full family of five! I have been collecting crystals since I was a kid- and have always wanted to write a book about something I love. ABC, A Book of Crystals is the first book I have written/ published.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
ABC, A Book of Crystals. It was inspired by an amazing two-year-old boy. My son, Calvin. We read a lot of books, and we are learning our alphabet. I have been collecting crystals ever since I was a kid- so I was on the lookout for an alphabet book about crystals- but couldn’t find what I was looking for! So I hopped on the phone with my sister, and got to brainstorming- and that’s how we came up with ABC, A Book of Crystals. We love to share this hobby together, and love to be able to teach the younger generation all about crystals!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Obsessively jotting down notes in my iPhone and somehow putting my thoughts all together!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Harry Potter- I received the first three books as a set, and from then on… I was hooked. Buying the latest books as soon as they were released- staying up all night to finish reading them… going to the movies. I grew up on Harry Potter. It was *magic*

What are you working on now?
Just promoting my book- doing a few readings and signings at local museums/ science centers and other various events.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
It’s going to take a lot of leg work- get out there and do your research! Come up with a solid marketing plan to try to get your feet moving and off the ground. It’s going to take a lot of that groundwork- just constantly trying to hustle the book and make a buzz about it! The book isn’t going to sell itself…

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! I couldn’t have completed the book without the assistance of many other special and talented people. It started with an idea, and from reaching out to others- the project started to take form, and the book really became a reality thanks to Susan Gabriel with Soul Sonshine Publishing!

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just keep your focus on yourself.

What are you reading now?
At this point in my life- we are reading a lot of bedtime stories, alphabet books, and children’s books right now! 🙂

What’s next for you as a writer?

Layla and the Golden Flower was inspired by its characters and world development.

Yes, I always start writing as if it was a film and then develop more and more the world, the characters and the story.

My biggest influence is without a doubt J. K. Rowling. She sparked the love of literature for sure and has been my idol ever since.

I am working on the second part of The Golden Flower Saga.

So far, not sure. I am still trying out websites since the book just came out. I didn’t have time yet to assess what was the most optimal results. It’s too early to tell.

Yes, always start with an outline and don’t worry about the quality of the first draft. Get out of your own head and put it all on paper first. Once you see it, you can change and improve it as you go.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Just write, don’t overthink the first draft, it will be bad anyway.

What are you reading now?
I am taking a reading break as I’m in the process of writing book 2 and don’t like to have other author’s voices in my head during the process.
